Air conditioners and refrigerators pose as big a threat to "life on the planet" as the threat of terrorism, Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday.
Kerry was in Vienna negotiating a global climate deal to phase out chemicals used as refrigerants in basic household and commercial appliances such as air conditioning and refrigerators, called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. The chemicals are a potent source of greenhouse gas emissions that many scientists blame for contributing to global warming.

Dear Secretary Kerry: I am writing to you while out on bail to ask for your help in preparing my defense to charges of illegal discharge of a firearm. Heeding your warning, in the early AM, I put a full clip from my Glock into that softly purring terrorist in the kitchen that bears the name Amana. Such an unusual name suggests foreign connections, and I would appreciate it if your could send along any information that you have on that point and as to the grave menace of refrigerator chemicals.
I fully agree with you, before I retired from corporate life I worked on the Stratospheric Ozone regulation in concert with the EPA as part of the EIA. Chlorinated solvents are the worst actors in the Halogen group of Chemicals. They have and were far reaching in use. At the start the EPA did not include the paper industry, or the cleaning industry. Yet, before they were done chlorinated solvents were deleted from use in all processes of manufacturing.
Frankly, I am not convinced that HCFC/R-22 had/has a deleterious effect on the “ozone layer”. For decades “political” scientists have been foisting a belief system upon policymakers and the public. Just as the hoax of “Silent Spring” has led to deaths and disease due to banned pesticides, the costs associated with moving from CFC’s to HCFC’s, I believe, have been largely unnecessary. Now, preparing to re-tool, yet again, with different refrigerants and delivery systems, costs will rise and the only results will be the public being fleeced and the elites getting richer. I, for one, will not be happy having to work on ammonia based systems. Not one bit.
I agree with what your writing. The work we id in the 90’s reduced the use of chlorinated solvents drastically, There has been a reduction in the so-called Ozone hole. Naturally ozone is produces by our forests and Ozone although not stable is restored naturally. Maybe if China and Brazil stop destroying forestry things might change.
When we reclaim any refrigerants today, we have strict standards to go by to minimize any “release” into the atmosphere. I will grant there are a very, very few disreputable goons who don’t follow procedures, but the overwhelming majority of us do take pains to ensure initially tight systems before charging and we will seek out any and all leaks in existing systems instead of simply “topping off the tank”, so to speak. The chance of losing my license and my livelihood and the fines and possible jail time is not something I will risk.
It is my understanding that the “ozone hole” fluctuates seasonally and has only been “measured” since the from the ground since the ‘50’s and orbitally since the late ‘70’s.
Kerry’s Purple Heart was actually awarded after he received wounds from a refrigerator in Vietnam.
You are correct. Holes in the ozone layer have existed at the poles periodically for thousands or millions of years. But we do not know the extent because measurements have only been taken in relatively recent times. In theory pollutants such as CFCs might make the holes larger than they might be otherwise, but this is strictly in theory. No one knows how much actual effect "pollutants" have on the ozone layer. The holes exist naturally and they fluctuate daily as the earth spins and seasonally and annually by natural processes and variations in the output of the sun and the distance of the earth from the sun. The ozone holes can expand quickly and recover quickly as well. It is just another natural phenomena that the left has found advantageous to create anxiety over to increase regulation and taxes.

And R-22 was found NOT to harm the Ozone. The government came back to Dupont and asked them to start making R-22 again but Dupont said their equipment was already modified to make the new version.
I totally agree. Kerry is whipping a dead horse.
That’s correct, trees an foliage create Ozone through their photo synthesis replenishing the natural loss of Ozone. I guess if China and India placed stricter rules on their emissions the atmosphere would become cleaner and the ozone layer would be thicker.

Either that, or he’s got a huge stake in whoever manufactures coolants.
