Turkey suspends European Convention on Human Rights in wake of failed coup
The Guardian ^ | July 21, 2016 | Kareem Shaheen in Ankara

Turkey has said it will suspend the European Convention on Human Rights during a state of emergency declared in the aftermath of last weekend’s coup attempt.

“Turkey will suspend the European Convention on Human Rights insofar as it does not conflict with its international obligations,” the deputy prime minister, Numan Kurtulmus, was quoted as saying by the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The state of emergency will allow the government to rule by decree, passing bills that have the force of the rule of law unless they are overturned by parliament, where the majority of MPs belong to the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party.

Turkish parliament votes to lift MPs' immunity from prosecution AP | May 20, 2016

EXCERPTS:

Turkey’s parliament has approved a bill to amend the constitution to strip MPs of immunity from prosecution, a move that paves the way for the trials of pro-Kurdish and other opposition legislators.

(...)

The amendment was proposed by the Justice and Development party after the president accused the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic party (HDP) of being an arm of outlawed Kurdish rebels and repeatedly called for their prosecution on terror-related charges. It puts 138 politicians, the vast majority of them from two opposition parties, at risk of prosecution.

(...)

The decision coincides with a wave of violence in Turkey’s south-east following the collapse of a more-than-two-year peace process between the state and the outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s party (PKK).

The HDP, which backs Kurdish and other minority rights, denies accusations that it is the political arm of the PKK, considered a terrorist group by Ankara and its allies. The party has urged the government to end security operations in the south-east and to resume peace efforts.

Right, saw the flying gunship firing into a large crowd on the night of the coup, so this is just setting their standard.

Quite similar to Hitler’s implementation of a dictatorship.

Tomorrow I fully expect a call to march back to the gates of Vienna. LOL!

Just kick them out of NATO and let the place burn. Maybe a joint Greek, Bulgarian,Romanian and Russia force will occupy Constantinople and European Turkey as a “safe zone” from all of the hell that is about to break loose.

Let the Kurds have there way with the eastern part.

The beheading of the 11 year old boy by the "moderates" supported by Obama was a tragedy, what is about to happen in Turkey will be a statistic.

[Irony defined.] On Thursday, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said it would be in Turkey’s interest “to keep the state of emergency only for the duration that it is absolutely necessary.” He also warned against arresting people just on the basis of their political attitude rather than a proven role in the coup. Austria, meanwhile, summoned Turkey’s ambassador and questioned him about the country’s future. “We want to clarify . . . which direction Turkey is going to take,” said Foreign Minister Sebatian Kurz in a radio interview cited by Reuters. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/state-of-emergency-begins-in-turkey-with-new-arrests-of-judges-generals/2016/07/21/604afada-4eb2-11e6-bf27-405106836f96_story.html

When you throw in Erdogan’s round up of judges and teachers, it looks like he’s following in the footsteps of Pol Pot.

I don’t see how this should prevent them from membership in the EU.

The Incirlik Airbase, in southeast Turkey, houses NATO’s largest nuclear-weapons storage facility. On Saturday morning, the American Embassy in Ankara issued an “Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens,” warning that power had been cut to Incirlik and that “local authorities are denying movements on to and off of” the base. Incirlik was forced to rely on backup generators; U.S. Air Force planes stationed there were prohibited from taking off or landing; and the security-threat level was raised to FPCON Delta, the highest state of alert, declared when a terrorist attack has occurred or may be imminent. On Sunday, the base commander, General Bekir Ercan Van, and nine other Turkish officers at Incirlik were detained for allegedly supporting the coup. As of this writing, American flights have resumed at the base, but the power is still cut off.

I think Erdogan has far grander plans than to become a member.

He will come as a conquerer.

At least in his demented mind.

It’s okay: Shariah law is so much better than Western human rights conventions, so don’t worry. :)

The silence of Erdogan’s actions, whether he staged the coup or not, is very troubling. The news blackout on our US bases even more so. While we’re distracted by the Republican convention this week, some very serious things are going on in Turkey that truly affect us rather directly.
