Theyre not threatening this as a true protest or at least, they werent before the Rules fiasco this afternoon but rather as leverage to secure a few rule changes from the RNC for the 2020 primaries. If the party agrees to tilt the board a bit towards conservative candidates (i.e. Ted Cruz) then Cruzs delegates will be good boys and girls this week. [Pro-Cruz] forces want to revise the rules that will reward states with closed primaries and for the RNC and Trump camp to allow Cruzs name to be placed in nomination from the convention floor
One threat the Cruz forces are said to be holding over the heads of the RNC and the Trump campaign is the specter of a large group of delegates in the hundreds simply leaving town after Cruz speaks on Wednesday night, exposing the nominee to the prospect of televised images of empty seats in the Quicken Loans Arena. Its an open question whether there are enough alternate delegates who can be rallied to fill such a number of seats
A source close to Cruz tells Fox News that the key sticking point is Cruzs speaking slot and specifically the content of his speech. The original agreement between team Trump and team Cruz allowed Cruz to speak without offering a formal endorsement of Trump. So far, Trumps folks have not asked to look at the speech.
-------------------------------------------------
On the Trump side, Roger Stone is said to have mobilized a group of 1,000 people to push back wherever his candidates interests are being threatened.
If anti-Trump groups show up outside the arena and start getting media coverage, pro-Trumpers will show up with their signs too to remind reporters that there are people on both sides.

Re; it didnt happen this year (or they would have stopped Trump)
Boy are you out of touch with reality. Trump won on a big crossover vote. I personally welcome it. We should be out there trying to convert Dems to become Republicans. That is what Dems do to us...and do it fairly for the most part.
Explains what turds the die hard Cruzers were here on FR.
I'm glad JR kicked their sorry asses off.
Their guy lost, fair and square! They are acting like spoiled brats, i.e. Democrats!............
Yes, when a Republican dies, they automatically become Democrats!..........amazing!........
The slimy Canadian lawyer needs to go back to Canada and take his goofy ‘speaking in tongues’, snake handling papa with him.
sob..still sneaking around trying to get his name on the ballot.
I do not get the closed primary fetish.
I did an analysis a few years ago, when claims were made that McCain only won open primaries, but not closed ones.
That was simply false.
What good would closed primaries do if the result was to nominate somebody that had appeal to only the furthest right fraction of the already small registered Republican party.
Like it or not Trump has demonstrated the appeal of a new paradigm, which may not please all conservatives, but which pragmatically seems to hold great promise of getting several things that have been high on their lists for years.
EXACTLY RIGHT!
Why is having a GOP version of DNC superdelegates a good idea?
Give him a slot on Friday night.
Cruz still smarting from when the Trump supporters walked out on his speech at the Grand Hyatt in NYC. Or if they stayed, they talked and made all sorts of other noise.
The Cruzbots never give up. It’s the Crazed Energizer Bunny syndrome that we saw with Gore in 2000.
Cruz could stop it but he’s still clinging to the fantasy that he might have a chance....he’s pretty much dead to me - thinking of donating to his Senate opponent and sending him a copy - don’t know what might wake him up..
I thought closed primary = Republicans only. Do I misunderstand something?
They are Globalist that will be supporting Hillary Clinton.
They are Traitors in other words.
*** I thought closed primary = Republicans only. Do I misunderstand something? ***
They wanted states who have closed Primaries to be rewarded with more “at large” delegates. I think the number was eight.
“At large” delegates are not tied to a geographical district, and are usually party elites.
You mean the remaining 100 Cruz delegates are going to go Code Pink on the GOP?? Shocker....
In my state, TX, some of the “at large delegates” are Rafael Cruz, Sr, his son, Rafael, jr, aka, Ted Cruz, our Governor, our Lt Governor, our Attorney General. Out of our our 155 delegates from TX, 47 are “at large” delegates, and 108 are regular delegate, three from each district, so that the locals have some input into the delegates.
