You have to realize that many Democrats are horrified at the prospects of voting Republican - the same way many of us vow to never, ever vote for a Democrat. However, if Trump is despised by the Republican "establishment", it will make the medicine go down better for those Democrats thinking of crossing over. They won't necessarily feel like they are a traitor to their party. Sort of along the lines of "my enemy's enemy is my friend".
Just my opinion.
Imagine a scenario in which we nominated Jeb Bush and some populist outsider like Trump ran on the Democrat side and beat out Crooked Hillary for the nomination. I think many of us would consider voting for the other side and a kicking and screaming Hillary would make that vote all the sweeter.
