I have never understood the claim that Indians are extinct. Indians are us. They assimilated into Western culture. How often have you heard someone mention they are a quarter Cherokee or something similar.
Indian blood is in my family. If it isn't in yours, the guy in the next cubicle at work may be part Indian. Or the girl you had a crush on in 10th grade. Or the policeman on patrol in your neighborhood right now. Indians aren't extinct. They're all around us. In 21st century America, American Indians are now just known as "Americans".
Hispanics are generally at least part Indian. Just because the tribe was Inca, Mayan, or Aztec rather than Cherokee doesn't make them any less Indian.
