Nah looks like he’s going to survive this. He landed his plane, talked to thousands of supporters, help a conference. Pretty sure the coup is going to fail.
This reminds me of the attempted coup by left-wing sections of the army in Indonesia in 1965, it went off half cock and failed woefully.
Over the next three months the army systematically wiped out all the communists and their sympathisers in Indonesia, probably half a million were killed. You don’t hear much these days about left-wing Indonesians.
I think Erdogan is going to follow a similar script here.
He would not have threatened a Stalin purge if he actually still had control. Those are done in secrecy after the military feels a little secure. He threatened it too scare a few troops away from the coup forces.
witnesses cited by Reuters said there were clashes between anti-coup protesters and the soldiers surrendering at Istanbuls Bosphorus Bridge after protesters attacked them.
Oh, no. He’ll try to be everyone’s best buddy and wonder why everyone’s mad at him.
The issue was that he could not land his plane for awhile. In Europe.
Duly elected doesn’t mean good. We should understand that.

It appears the rebels have the air force and Erdogan has ground troops. Generals and colonels are being arrested.

Meaning coup movement continues"
“He landed his plane, talked to thousands of supporters”
I wonder about his supporters who came pouring out so quickly.
I noticed that they were overwhelmingly military age men, very often with military/police style short hair, and many with islamic style short beards.
I wonder if he had previously organized groups to rule the streets - secret police, auxiliary militias, religious societies, religious police and such. They seemed rather uniform, even it in plainclothes.
I am not so sure that this was a spontaneous public outpouring, as it was activation of alert rosters.
