I know I will not win prizes with this comment: I would have voted it down because the music sucked in the fifties.

It was a Sock Hop where Chuck Berry got his sound.

What was the second place idea? An 1850s cotillion?
They could just go with a groovy 1970s theme.
"50's dances" happened when 70s kids who'd seen American Grafitti or Happy Days wanted to dress up like their parents had.
By the 80s high schoolers were having "60's dances," because that's when they'd been conceived.
So by now, kids should be having "90's dances," not going back 60 years to their grandparents' day.
Maybe the problem at Harvard is the students didn't have any real connection to the 1950s. All they know about it is what they read in a textbook.

No point in arguing with them...just tell them they don’t have to attend if it bothers them.

A “sock hop” was typically a dance on a high school basketball court; you took your shoes off to protect the floor. That is now racist?

A sock hop is what white kids enjoyed...THAT is now labeled racist!

Chuck Berry’s “duck walk” - one of the classics of modern pop culture. I’ve tried it, and you need to be in shape.

Once a month at lunch in our junior high gym we listened to rock and roll and danced...How racist could it get?
To: Steve_Seattle
I think he can still do it!

Donchano, the socks were all white?
