Rick Perry on Trump's border wall: Never going to happen

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry might have given Donald Trump a full-throated endorsement for president, but he is not so fond of the presumptive Republican nominee's plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexican border.

In an exchange posted Monday with Snapchat’s Peter Hamby on the social network's political show, "Good Luck America," Perry shot down Trump's proposal.

"I’m for Donald Trump, and he says we’re going to build a wall, the Mexicans are gonna pay for it," he said. Hamby then injected, "It’s not going to happen."

This is the operative part of Perry's statement.

"Well, it’s not," Perry agreed, adding it might not only in the literal sense. "It’s a wall, but it’s a technological wall, it’s a digital wall. There are some that hear this is going to be 1,200 miles from Brownsville to El Paso, 30-foot high, and listen, I know you can’t do that."

A physical wall works just fine from El Paso overland to the Pacific. But you ust don't build a physical wall along a river -- especially if it's the only water source in a semi-arid region. Ranchers and livestock and wildlife on both sides of the river need unhindered access to the water.

That's not to say that a secure barrier can't nonetheless be erected. The Israelis have a similar problem when the Jordan River is the only thing separating them from Jordan. There is no fence along this border, save for a common 6' fence of hogwire, mounted on metal posts and topped by two strands of barbed wire that runs about a quarter-mile back from the river. There are frequent gates, most of them left open.

The real "wall" in this case are Israeli border guards supported by high-tech devices -- sensors, cameras, etc. -- and are highly mobile, with ready access to previously developed strong points and firing positions. If it works for Israel on the Jordan, it can work for us on the Rio Grande.

Thus, the Rio Grande border can be effectively secured without a wall...if Trump wants to do it.

Did some memo go out...both Perry and Jeb same day?

I will vote for Trump even if he had not said he would build a wall. Sheesh!

Why do you say that? Seems Perry is not very supportive of a wall...

I like Perry because he is a good Aggie and overall a good governor for Texas. If you lived in Texas all your life, you would know what that (being an Aggie) means. And, before any Longhorns attack me, I am a Longhorn and have lived in Austin 60+ years. That said, both my kids graduated from A & M. Thankfully. The Austin main campus has gone to hell.

Notwithstanding he’s an Aggie, Rick shows his pedigree of having been in government too long. The first thing you lose is your backbone rendering you a weakling when it comes to fighting the bureaucracy. Trump has fought the bureaucracies’ of New York for four decades and welcome’s the challenge. The wall will be built.

I'm rather sympathetic to the idea of a wall, but think this line of Perry's points out something worth noting. "If you build a 30-foot wall from El Paso to Brownsville, the 35-foot ladder business gets real good." I imagine there are ways of getting over walls, if there are no guards nearby --- and even if there's high voltage on them, ways of breaking or insulating oneself from the current.

Maybe it would be more effective just to hire more border patrol agents, and improve the electronic surveillance. If Trump builds an "electronic wall" -- and it's effective -- he can count that as having delivered on his promise.

Perhaps more important than the wall itself, though, is to stop the acceptance of illegal aliens once they get inside. If they know they'll be sent back, they'll quit coming. (Except for terrorists, of course, who have no intentions of staying -- the ones backed by sophisticated organizations will still be able to come in by plane or boat, as with illegal drugs. With borders as long as ours, there's no practical way to wall ourselves off from everything. We can, though, stop the mass influx of illegal aliens.)

Never liked the guy. Something about him screams “fraud” to me.

When he was governor he did everything he could to get illegal Mexicans free taxpayer stuff including college tuitions.

For decades the illegals came in and took work away from Americans. I’m talking about good paying construction jobs. In 1985 I was in management for a large homebuilding company. We had white carpenters, a white plumber, a white electrician, a white trim guy and a black roofer. You’ll be hard pressed to find any white folks building houses in Texas today. After decades there are none with the skills.

Reminiscent of the statements once made by a Mormon who later went on to become one of the presidents of the Mormon church in the early 1970's, by the name of   "Joseph Fielding Smith (see link).   Mr. Smith said the following in 1961:

"We will never get a man into space. This earth is man's sphere and it was never intended that he should get away from it. The moon is a superior planet to the earth and it was never intended that man should go there. You can write it down in your books that this will never happen."
I predict that Mr. Perry will also soon be laughed at concerning his current naysaying prognostications.

Same thing here in Virginia. 15 years ago most of the people on the jobsite would be Americans speaking English, today it’s usually difficult to find the one guy who speaks English. I know most of them must be illegal aliens.

Gov. Gardisil got elected by claiming he’d build the wall. Two weeks after he won he said, “It ain’t gonna happen.”

It was Kay Bailey Hutchison R-TX that defunded the Secure Fence Act in a subsequent bill.

This confirms what Trump says all the time. Politicians are all talk and no action. Politicians are always there to tell you why things are always impossible.

What is that saying? Those who say something is impossible need to get out of the way of the one doing it.

The RINO’s continue to push the lowered expectations that have gotten them elected for all these years. They are afraid of Trump, because if he’s a success, it will reveal what frauds they’ve been all these years.
