My husband is 77 and he fell two weeks ago and ripped all the skin off of his left arm. The hospital said it was akin to third degree burns. It is wrapped. They put on an ointment that is made out of silver. Apparently no bacteria can get through silver. Who knew? But he has it changed once a week, not every day like they used to.
Silver bandages greatly prevent infection, but studies found out silver prevents the cells in the bottom two layers of skin from doing their work well—they don’t lay the foundation quite right (silver makes them go a little crazy, but something does get done).
Yes, I’ve seen bacitracin ointment now with silver in the stores.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery
Good luck to you and your husband.

Importance in Burn Therapy:
Silver also has had a significant impact on the treatment of burns. Twenty years ago it was common for the wounds of severely burned patients to become infected, which delayed healing and sometimes led to death. Today silver sulfadiazine is used by hospitals worldwide to kill bacteria allowing the body time to restore the area naturally. Sulfadiazine is a know antibacterial agent. Combined with silver, studies show it is at least 50 times more active than other antibacterial agents. Silvadene now is the most widely used topical treatment for burn therapy. Other silver compounds also are being developed for use wherever silver sulfadiazine proves ineffective.
Silver oxide is one of the best treatments for preventing wound infections. Justin, my oldest son is a medical technician in a hospital burn unit and uses it all the time.
Silver is an antibacterial. An Antibiotic. Think of it like mercury poisoning of people but it is ok with us mammals... the nasties die from it.
