I went to Graceland with my extended Family 10 years ago, but never got to go around town and get a feel for the city. So I don't know where the protesters are at now.
Although I do have a wonderful story about the Memphis Airport when I was returning home from Air Force Basic Training.
about the only time I was in downtown Memphis was to go to the Peabody hotel to see the ducks and to go to the Rendezvous BBQ. I drove 3 old ladies to Memphis about 5 years ago to visit Graceland. They were all still in love with Elvis :)
They gave me directions etc. They had good memories. They were just too old to drive that far anymore and it was time for their Elvis fix (every couple of years or 3 )..
Yes we also went to Tupelo !!!
:)
oh and I did go with some friends who lived in the suburbs to Beale Street to sing and preach on the street one weekend but that was more than 20 years ago..
Last year during Elvis Week, there was a Canadian couple here with their little dog. They stopped at a Chinese restaurant one night and left the dog in the car. Being Memphis, someone came by and stole the dog. The people had to leave Memphis the next day so they couldn’t hang around to look for the dog. By sheer luck, the dog was found AND returned to its owners. They came back the Memphis to retrieve their dog and had some type of ceremony in the mayor’s office.
Lesson learned: do not leave anything of value in your car in Memphis wether you’re a resident or visitor. I live here so I know.
BTW, there was a little girl who is a patient at St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital coming across the bridge from Arkansas and they got a police escort through the herd. The herd was nice enough to let them through.
