From state highways, foothill campgrounds and aerial surveys, it's easy to see the catastrophic tree die-off in California forests. What isn't as easily grasped is the scale of rapidly expanding tree mortality in the state's 40 million acres of forestlandand what to do about it.
The U.S. Forest Service said in June that its survey showed more than 66 million trees, mostly pine species, have died in the southern Sierra Nevada alone, and more are dying. Forestry experts say the scale of the die-off is beyond anything ever observed. They attribute the tree mortality to four years of drought, bark beetle infestations, climate change and mismanagement.

Thanks greenies.
Here’s an idea ya morons: allow lumbering. Put the lumber companies in charge of the forests. They will do everything possible to make sure their revenue source does not disappear. (Ok with banning clear cutting.)
The model is cattle ranching. Why do you morons think there are so many cows?!

Just another in a growing list of reasons why we want to form The State of Jefferson.
Tim-ber!
What is “The pine beetle” Alex.
The federal government is mismanaging public forests on purpose. You see, Georgia Pacific and other huge lumber corporations sit on huge private forest land. They don’t want the competition from pissant little lumber companies using public forests for their raw timber supply.
Why do you think the big timber corporations give so much money to greenie groups? As always, follow the money.
I agree with you. But only in part. I think part of the problem is ALSO that many US Forest Service types now worship “Mother Gaia” and view humans as an illness. “Multiple use” has been replaced with “Whatever WE Want for Mother Gaia” as a guiding principle.
But you can be arrested and fined if you use some trees to heat your home.
Exactly.. the big lumber mills crushed the smaller owners just like the Home Depots and Rite Aides have crushed the mom and pop hardware stores and pharmacies.
The support from Big Lumber for green protests years ago is a story missed by the General public.... One in which well intending, would be environmentalist were used to do the bidding of big business.
Big Government got better tax revenue from fewer sources, a win win for big biz and big gov. A lose lose for the little people and in the end our environment
Most of our eastern forests were denuded of trees by American settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. But when the Plains and West opened up the farmers abandoned these poor-soil farms and today they are...forests again! Yes, trees will always grow back. Just ask anyone who ignores a vacant lot in the Pacific Northwest.
Don’t forget the Spotted Owl. Lots of small lumber oprations had their forest shut down for habitat protection.
Yep, the Spotted Owl and the Yellow Legged Frog in our area of the Sierra Foothills.
Like Globull warming that had to be renamed Climate Change because there wasn’tenough warming to remain believable.....the protected critters have now all but faded too....having served their purpose of Mass hysteria and the fleecing of the public coffers and private business.
The Pine Beetle now seems to be headed for revenue raising status for those positioned right. Following the last major drought in Ca in the late 70’s I lost 40+ large Ponderosa Pines on a 3 acre parcel but was at least allowed to sell the lumber before it went bad.
Wish I had the trees instead of the money I got.
An unexpected fact was how much noise Pine Beetles make chewing while killing trees ...really quite surprising
