Ike was a nice man and a great general. He was a symbol of stability at a time when the country needed to catch its breath and get on with the business of raising families and expanding the peacetime economy.
He didn't really understand politics. In 1952, it wasn't altogether clear whether he wanted to run as a Republican or a Democrat. He eventually chose the former.
Basically his staff and cabinet ran the country. In press conferences he was downright incoherent. But it was OK, since the White House press corps were happy to cut him slack. Times were different.

Eisenhower was the biggest reason that Joe McCarthy didn't get any support from his own party. People trying to make the point that an amicable golfer was a great conservative are idiots.
We should've nominated Robert Taft. By nominating a very questionable Republican, we got nowhere for eight years. No reason to repeat those kinds of mistakes.
