When Dallas police used a bomb-carrying robot to kill a sniper, they also kicked off an ethical debate about technologys use as a crime-fighting weapon.
In what appears to be an unprecedented tactic, police rigged a bomb-disposal robot to kill an armed suspect in the fatal shootings of five officers in Dallas. While there doesnt appear to be any hard data on the subject, security experts and law enforcement officials said they couldnt recall another time when police have deployed a robot with lethal intent. If lethally equipped robots can be used in this situation, when else can they be used? says Elizabeth Joh, a University of California at Davis law professor who has followed U.S. law enforcements use of technology. Extreme emergencies shouldn't define the scope of more ordinary situations where police may want to use robots that are capable of harm.

Interestingly enough, I posted this in another thread yesterday morning:
“I wish theyd give cops a robot like the bomb squads use so the cop can hide in his car while the robot rolls up and talks to the citizen.”
What the hell was the appropriate response, conduct an assault against a barricaded suspect who had already clearly demonstrated deadly ability to use military tactics to shoot twelve police officers?
We teach our soldiers to be cognizant of snipers as well, assess your position in a room, stay in shadows or below sills...
They should be applauded for coming up with an ingenious way of neutralizing this shooter. Its not supposed to be fair or sacrificial.
Is the robot okay? It was not hurt too badly was it?
"I need a lawyer. That headline is nothing but a hate crime
against robots. We are innocent. "
The problem is that they set themselves up as judge, jury and executioner.
I don’t understand your point. In this situation, deadly force was called for. In any situation where there’s an active shooter situation, isn’t deadly force called for? And used to kill perpetrators?
#RobotLivesMatter
to quote Hillary “we came, we saw, he died” so “’what difference does it make?”
Because this was the first time technology has been used to take out a criminal or an enemy.
They had him cornered. He wasn’t going anywhere. And judging by the fact that he didn’t shoot the robot, he may very well have been out of ammunition.
The bot was an R2FU.
No kidding, robot lives matter!
Asimov is turning over in his grave.
No debate.

Thanks. Good point. It will be interesting to see down the road, when they do a report on this incident, if they mention this.
I don’t give a damn if they call in the Acme Anvil Co. and drop it on his freakin’ head! What are these people thinking, that dead from a bullet is different somehow? By their crazy logic maybe cops should just he disarmed altogether. Insane.
NO! The murderer of many people did that all by himself. In fact the LEOs tried to talk him out peacefully for hours but the turkey said he was going to kill more of them.
