CCW I assume is Concealed Carry Weapon, right? He announced it.
But did he really have a CCW permit?
Very tragic event but probably the fault of the poor dead guy. Officers are edgy for good reasons. The last thing you want to do is make an sudden movements. He should have froze until given instructions.
When stopped I always keep both hands on the wheel until given instructions.
Even so, he obviously screwed up. He announced it to the cop. He said he was carrying. Did he ask the cop what he wanted him to do? Did he remove his hands from the steering wheel? It seems he did.
I've been through this and as a CCW permit holder, we have responsibilities.
Officer: "License and registration please.
Me: "Yessir. (leaving hands on steering wheel) Officer, I am a concealed carry permit holder and I do have a firearm on me."
Officer: "Where is it located?"
Me: "Inside the waistband on my left hip. What would you like me to do?"
Officer: "Please step out of the vehicle. I will remove the firearm and then we can proceed. It will be returned to you."
Simple. Yet somehow, I don't think this is what transpired with Mr. Castile.
