Austrias constitutional court has annulled the result of the countrys presidential elections a week before the winning candidate was due to be sworn into office.
The court president, Gerhart Holzinger, announced on Friday that the run-off vote between Norbert Hofer of the populist rightwing Freedom party and Green-backed Alexander Van der Bellen would have to be repeated across the whole country after an investigation had revealed irregularities in the count of the vote in several constituencies.
In May, Hofer had lost out to Van der Bellen in a knife-edge election, with a majority of only 30,863 votes.
While the Austrian presidency is a largely ceremonial role, the outcome has been seen as hugely symbolic, with the Freedom party seemingly buoyed by growing anti-refugee sentiments and disaffection with the countrys political establishment.

How about that!!
Hofer lost due to vote fraud.
The election was annulled and will be held again.
Ensuring integrity of the electoral process was the impetus behind the Federal Constitutional Court’s decision today to set aside the result.
I don’t really understand why the fraudulent ballots weren’t just tossed out and the election won by the real winner, the candidate from FPÖ. But this is better than nothing.
had been considered the most likely FPÖ candidate. On 28 December 2015 he said that he considered himself too young for the office and that he would prefer his party to pick someone else as its candidate.[
Hofer’s campaign slogan was “Put Austria First.”
The right will win this time.
Al Gore says sh*t why didn’t I think of that.
BOOM! I just asked after Brexit if this wasn’t stolen!
Thank you, Jesus!
Amazing! The Left was caught cheating!
You didn’t have to ask. We know this is how the left operates: keep counting until they win.
The “progressives” use Stalin’s method.
Of course.
Shocking.
Tossing the fraudulent ballots and allowing the actual victor to take office would be more just, but I’ll take a revote.
Lets win this for Dino Rossi!
