As America reels from yet another mass shooting, inevitable questions resurface about guns laws and the nation's pervasive firearm culture. Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census...
...it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S.

The shocker for me was DC #2. What do they know?
I hear or see CBS and I think Dan Rather.
Dan, I’d Rather you shut up.
For users of Ad Block Plus, this is all on one page.
From the article:"NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use."
I live in one of the most 2A unfriendly states in the US and I do not own a single firearm that is required to be registered -- by the feds, the state, or local gov't. And I am a 100% law abiding citizen.
This "study" is kinda like counting the number of $250K exotic sports cars in a state and concluding how fast the average citizen of the state drives.
ADP is like using a condom.....something gets lost. :0)
If you go to a good clean site, you don’t need it.
Wyoming here! I don’t even know how many guns I have anymore! FUCBS and FUBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From the first page of the article:
-
“Here is a look at per capita weapons data,
based on the ATF’s National Firearms Registration
and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.
While the ATF’s National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record
is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive.
NFA firearms only include machine guns, short-barreled rifles,
short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, etc.”

or close the business.
The registry they are using is of NFA weapons, machineguns, short-barrelled rifles and shotguns, and destructive devices.
Yes, when the business is closed, records are supposed to be surrendered, but they are still not legally allowed to be included in a federal data base. I know that is always ignored, but it is ignored against the law.
Who the heck admits to firearms on their census? Those that do need evaluation.
These statistics don’t include the massive number of guns that were “lost” in boating accidents. (;
More like half of a percent.
This is a hilarious example of how clueless CBS is.
What maroons!
Exactly.
I would venture to guess that most 4473s have been copied by the state or feds. PA state police have been keeping an illegal list of 4473s and NICS checks for years. Went all the way to the PA SC who told them to get rid of it. They told the SC to go to he!!. Sorta like hussein O.
Me too. only my Saiga 410 is on the books. I’d say at least 50% of all guns are not registered. And that is a good thing.
Really? Are you 'reeling'? I'm not.
Maybe it's just me.
I have no firearms “registered”. I have the one suppressor.
Is your saiga 410 a semi?
Yes, semi auto. Very fun to shoot and surprisingly hard hitting. Would not like to be on the receiving end.
The article is bogus. They are construing NFA-regulated items as “heavy” weapons by definition. Thus, States with the most NFA-regulated items are “most heavily armed”. This is of course idiotic.
What would be educational are stats on how many of the “heavy weapons” actually registered under NFA are ever used in crimes, even over a long period (let’s say 50 years). Would the percentage of registered NFA items used in violent crimes versus non-NFA firearms used in violent crimes be measurable? Perhaps .0000000000001%? Less?
