Merkel: Britain can’t cherry-pick Brexit terms

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that the EU could survive a Brexit and warned Britain the union would not tolerate “cherry-picking” in upcoming negotiations on their future relations.

“The EU is strong enough to withstand Britain’s withdrawal,” she told the German parliament ahead of a crisis summit of the 28 member states in Brussels. […]

“We will ensure there are no negotiations based on the principle of cherry-picking,” she said to applause. “There must be and will be a noticeable difference between whether a country wants to be a member of the European Union family or not.”

She added: “Anyone wishing to leave this family cannot expect to lose all the obligations but keep the privileges. This applies to Britain as it does to everyone else.” …

This is probably a silly question-but why doesn’t the UK grow and raise more of their own food? History says they provided for themselves in the past...

______________

How much food does the UK currently produce? The DEFRA report says “Currently the UK is 60% self-sufficient in all foods and over 74% self-sufficient in foods that can be produced in this country”. This “self-sufficiency ranges from around 10% for fresh fruit to around 100% for cereals.

60% is high in the modern period. Britain was last self-sufficient in food in the first half of the 19th century. With the Empire and a commitment to free trade, Britain’s self sufficiency had dropped to 40% by 1914 and dropped to nearer 30% in the 1930s .

Nonetheless, by the 1980s Britain produced nearer 70% of her food, partly as a result of the protectionist measures such as the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, although it is worth noting that the EU restricts as well as encourages. For example, Britain could be more than self-sufficient in dairy products, but is restricted by the EU to producing even enough to meet her own needs viz.: “a phased liberalisation of EU milk production – due to come into full force in 2015 – should help the UK’s dairy farmers. Best in the world - The Corporation of the City of London and runs London proper and they are all financiers. They and others already think, not without some justification, that they are already the center of the world when it comes to banking.

“This is probably a silly question-but why doesn’t the UK grow and raise more of their own food? History says they provided for themselves in the past.”

When you live on a cold rock in the middle of the North Sea, you need to import food and you need to colonize other parts of the world.

As for the Brits, the problem is going to be the wine.

France, Italy, Spain and Argentina may play hard ball.

Merkel is responsible for hundreds of deaths, and more to come. Prosecute her to the fullest extent of the law.

Silly question, what did I say to make you ask me that?

Besides, I’d give reasonable probability to a swing to the right.

Regardless, I don’t think threatening the remaining EU members will be a persuasive strategy.

Historically, after WWII, Britain maintained its food rationing a few years longer than the completely devastated and partitioned [West] Germany did.

Don't know about Merkel's homeland.

“Import food from the US. We can make them a deal.”

The US can do that and that would be good for American agriculture as it would increase prices.
