Australia's republican movement says membership has surged in the wake of the Brexit vote, as Australians question the benefits of remaining part of little Britain.
An AusExit campaign, including calls to remove the Union Jack from the flag and remove the British monarch as head of state, has gained momentum since Friday, when Britain voted to leave the European Union.
Peter FitzSimons, the chairman of Australias republican movement, said Australia had belonged to the British empire but the historic ties between the nations had become less relevant because Great Britain barely exists anymore.
Its one thing for the monarchists to say we should be staying so very closely aligned to Great Britain but how do you feel about staying so closely aligned to little Britain? he told ABC Radio.
"From the moment that Brexit came through, social media came alive, with people saying 'this is ridiculous, let us be our own people, let us get away from this'.

Well it will sure save them a whole lotta money...lol
We should all leave the UN.........
The Aussies are not already autonomous? Gov’t Gunz theft notwithstanding.
Eventually there will just be England........
Hey, you have my tag line! Who was first?
Pure BS.
FUN
It’s a nice piece of land being used for nothing worthwhile. As a bonus we could auction collectors souvenir ash trays made from UNESCO world heritage signs.
The elites are just having a tantrum over Brexit aren’t they? TheY alternately fret and then beat their chests and threaten. And you know what? They aren’t going to do squat.
Australians reject a republic, knowing it will only add another layer to our already bloated government.
Sounds like a revenge from the Left. Australia is already free from Britain. No regulation or taxes come from UK. Commonwealth is a club, not a political union
Little England will be just fine. Now at least they can go back to using incandescent light bulbs. I’m sure the Chinese still make them.
I have had it about a month maybe two.....
Use the land to build a theme park!.......America Land!.......
That would be fun!.......
Ok, you were first but I did not plagiarize. Nice one, yours is more emphatic.
"With all due respect, the EU, may it RIP, was slipping. Ten years ago, could we have had Brexit?"
The headline is simply incorrect - even the republicans in Australia seldom have any intention of leaving the Commonwealth - republics can remain part of the Commonwealth and most have (India, Pakistan, South Africa are three examples of Republics that remain Commonwealth nations).
And the republican movement is always looking for an excuse to call for another referendum. It’s possible they could win someday, but they have to come up with a model that the Australian people want, not just oppose the one we already have.
