France wants quick British divorce from EU, Germany cautious

France's foreign minister called on Saturday for the European Union to move ahead quickly to seal the terms of a British exit, arguing that the other 27 members needed to give the bloc new purpose or risk populism taking hold.

"Negotiations have to go quickly in the common interest," Jean-Marc Ayrault said on his way to a meeting in Berlin of foreign ministers from the six founding members of the EU - Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

Britain voted on Thursday to leave the EU, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and dealing the biggest blow since World War Two to the European project of forging greater unity.

The EU's other members and the British government must now work out the terms for the country's departure and future relationship with the bloc.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told German newspaper Bild that Britain must consider what kind of a relationship it wanted with the EU but it could not pick and choose.

Out is out," Juncker added. "Now the priority is a clean divorce, because citizens and businesses need legal certainty."

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, hosting Saturday's meeting, struck a more cautious note but said it was essential to preserve the "project of freedom and stability" that the six founding EU members had forged.

"It is completely clear that we now have a situation that allows for neither hysteria nor paralysis," Steinmeier said, adding that EU leaders must address the challenges of migration, security and unemployment.

"We must not resort to hectic activity, and act as if all the answers are ready. But after the British decision we mustn't lapse into depression and inactivity," he told reporters.

The E.U. is imploding, and the Central Banks are worried they are about to lose complete control.

I expect the Central Banks to go into full fear and threats mode. It's all a bunch of nonsense from control freaks.

Europeans are all screwed up, been that way since WWI. All of them have separate minds, how can it be possible to come into one as in the EU?

They are afraid that France will follow if Le Pin drives France’s weakling Holland to the wall.

France and Germany started this travesty many years ago. Let them deal with the real.

It’s interesting to see old, national character stereotypes being aired in public, in the interest of furthering loss of national identity. Emoting French, plodding Germans. The French will waver. Plodding will win the day.

Well I’ve heard Holland/Netherlands have wanted to be out for a long time now. Don’t know if that’s true though?

Actually, the key reason for the quick idea is that French elections (the presidential election is spring of 2017 and the parliament election is the summer of 2017) are coming up.

If this goes to one full year (which experts say is necessary)....it will have a significant affect on the election and likely bring right-wing politics into the spectrum.

The Netherlands has the same problem...spring election in 2017.

And in Germany....three German states will have elections in the March to May period.

I was just amused at national stereotypes coming into such obvious display among those who would dissolve their nations.

Good cop, bad cop. Don’t believe the spin. The EU (Germany/France) will drag this out and try to back door GB back into the EU, IMO.

Interesting, didn’t know that, and that explains the sudden swing.

Perhaps the European leaders are getting a little nervous?

After all European history shows us when this happens it’s not a good thing for their leaders.

There were several college professors (UK-type) who did the analysis on Friday and said that the exit-treaty deal with the EU would take a minimum of 12 months. First, you have to write the wording. Then it has to pass the Parliament of the UK. Then it has to pass the majority of the 751 members of the EU. Then it has to go before and pass at least 20 of the 27 member states of the EU. You can go and do the math to this but unless someone writes some really friendly deal and allows them the outsider status of Norway (they also aren’t a member of the EU)....that’s about the only way to hustle this up and get it done in four months. But then, the Norway-deal wouldn’t punish the UK, which is what most of the elite of the EU desire to happen.

I should also note....the Scottish referendum to leave the UK...probably won’t occur before 1 September (it’ll shock me if they can get this up and ready to vote in 30 days). The last time they voted on this....it was 44-percent in favor of leaving. It’s hard to predict this....but they might be able to get around 52-to-55 percent to agree on leaving the UK....thus getting them to the front door of the EU.

But sit and think about this. Scotland doesn’t exactly have it’s own currency, and their economic situation might be a bit shaky on the first year, if the business operations suddenly realize the tax impact upon them in the region. So, why would the EU allow them easily in the front door? I could see a lengthy three year time-period where Scotland is held at the front-door and not allowed to enter the EU.

Toss in Wales and Northern Ireland, along with Gibraltar...maybe even the Falkland Islands, along with London who all may want their own referendum to exit the UK, and then find that getting into the EU isn’t that simple or quick.

Then, let’s add this one little ‘Monty Python-factor’....what if two districts that make up Scotland...vote ‘stay in the UK’, and they get angry and frustrated about being forced to leave the UK....so they demand a referendum to separate their district from Scotland and be an enclave of the UK....on the far north coast? Or perhaps five neighborhoods of London want a referendum to exit the London-City-state, and be part of the UK?

In essence, this referendum deal has opened the Pandora of all Pandoras Boxes. In twelve months, you could have 20 kingdoms, enclaves, city-states, empires, or countries existing in what was the UK....and it would spread across Europe within three quick years.

Pull up a map of Europe in 1800. Note over 300 separate states, kingdoms, empires, countries, city-states. This election brings us full-circle....if the act of a referendum is allowed to continue on and on and on.

The EU was a terrible idea. Liberals will go to their DEATHS rather than admit they made a mistake. Great Britain just called them on it. They are presently shivering in their basements.
