He said that "the British people have voted to leave the EU and their will must be respected... the will of the British people is an instruction which must be delivered."
"There can be no doubt about the result."
Cameron gave no timetable for his departure, but said that he wanted a new leader to be in place by October when his Conservative Party holds its annual conference.
Boris Johnson, a former London mayor who campaigned for the UK's departure from the EU, is tipped by bookmakers as Cameron's likely successor.
Johnson, who was greeted by a booing crowd when he left his home on Friday morning, thanked voters for their decision, pledged that the UK would remain committed to Europe and urged unity.
"I think the electorate have searched in their hearts and answered as honestly as they can," he said. "They have decided to vote to take back control from a European Union that has become too remote."

Another one bites the dust...
You missed a massive live thread on all of this.
It was dramatic.
:)
well bye
I expect Boris Johnson now to take over...
Time will tell..
Brexit is already paying dividends.
What amazing times we are living in! Regime change in progress in our country. I believe it now. The evil Dems here will exit kicking and screaming. At least Cameron has the good sense to exit.
I didn’t realize Boris Johnson had become an MP since he stopped being mayor.
He could be next PM!
Only good for Trump!!!!
You know what, Cameron? Your former subjects don't give a damn what you want. Leave now.
And if you're so damned upset about the whole thing, rub their faces in it by not accepting the lucrative retirement package you have coming to you. HA! That'll learn 'em.
Bye dave. Could you please take the lyin’ king with you?
Thanks Travis. ;)
If Boris takes over, he better make it up with Trump NOW. Vilifying the next prez is no way to start out as a leader of a great country. Some of these Brit pols have big mouths.
See ya, chump!
It will be good I think.
Boris at least used to famous for going against the grain.
More than a decade ago he attacked GWB and Blair for not saying Islam is the problem.
I stole it from the cartoonist, and just erased the family using Windows Paint, a 5 minute job.
Obama had the gall to tell the Brits how they should vote, the Brits chose to ignore him (as the rest of the world is now learning to do), and voted to leave.
Trump noted in his speech that this was an embarrassment to Obama, as was the Supreme Court decision on his executive orders on immigration.
Trump basted Obama thoroughly, and I doubt if Obama has the personal courage to stay in D.C. if Trump wins the election. He should slink back to Kenya and try to rebuild his home country.
Yeah, but I still like the queen.
Well, he needs to get off saying awful things about Trump. He, like everybody else, misread the American electorate.
