House drops Confederate Flag ban for veterans cemeteries

A measure to bar confederate flags from cemeteries run by the Department of Veterans Affairs was removed from legislation passed by the House early Thursday.

The flag ban was added to the VA funding bill in May by a vote of 265-159, with most Republicans voting against the ban. But Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) both supported the measure. Ryan was commended for allowing a vote on the controversial measure, but has since limited what amendments can be offered on the floor.

Slavery died out everywhere it existed in the Western Hemisphere of the reasons he cited.

But in none of those cases you mention did slavery "die out". In every case it was ended by being outlawed by the government, and almost always over the opposition of the slave owners. So how long and under what circumstances would it have taken for the government to end slavery in the U.S. and for the remaining slave holding states to say "OK?" Or for the Confederacy to have done it assuming they won their independence?

The North didn’t go to war to free the slaves. It went to war to preserve the Union and won. The South went to war to preserve slavery and lost everything.

Your public school indoctrination was successful. Also, your statement appears to be internally inconsistent. If the North didn't go to war to free the slaves, then why would the South need to do anything to preserve slavery?

I went to Catholic schools bozo. You going to knock Catholicism? Go ahead, I dare you. The North went to war to preserve the Union because the South seceded in order to preserve an economic system based on the use of slave labor. It started a war to preserve that system and lost. The South lost the war it started and no amount of historical revisionism and intellectual acrobatics by you Lost Causers is going to change that fact.

What answer would satisfy your concern?

Whatever one provides support to the claim that slavery in the South was on its death bed and would have ended in a very short time, which was the original claim I was asking about.

So 25 to thirty years is a very short time?

If 680,000 don’t loose their lives.

Your education, Catholic or other, failed you. At least in your follow up statement you admit the causes were economic. Beyond that, you apparently failed to study to discover WHY the South resorted to succession to resolve the economic differences with the federal government.

You have to search beyond the articles of succession and the education monopoly’s false narrative to discover the truth.

BTW, if you keep up the name-calling, this discussion will end. That is one sign of a lost debate for the name caller.

Also end of discussion if you continue to make your religion a reason for your sense of victimhood.

That is unsightly and inappropriate in response to anything I have said to you.

There is nothing to debate. The South launched a war it couldn’t have possibly won and it lost. Why do you go on carrying a cross for lost and evil cause? Would you have preferred to live in a Balkanized country? What would America look like today if the South had won? Are you an American or a ‘southerner’’? My education didn’t fail me. You never received one.

If 680,000 don’t loose their lives.

I don't see the relevance of that so let my try a different tact and ask directly. What would have made Southern slave owners give up slavery?

SBG, it will make sense to you when you understand that Lincolnism is a type of secular religion centered on a worship of government’s divinity, as expressed in that great Unitarian hymn to state power The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Ironically there are churches that don’t notice who or what this hymn is celebrating.

Lincolnism celebrates a divine right of its leader to bring death and destruction on those who refuse to bow to its power. One wonders how they would react if say an Obama were to call up 75,000 troops to wage war on North Carolina for opposing gay marriage or some other great moral crusade.

jmacusa, it will make sense to you when you understand that Traitorism is a type of secular religion centered on a celebration of selfish and cowardly anarcism. It’s not particularly clever or original and in fact is expressed in that great Unitarian hymn to state power Dixie. Ironically there are churches that don’t notice who or what this hymn is celebrating.

Traitorism celebrates a divine right of its leaders to bring death and destruction on those who refuse to bow to its power. One wonders how they would react if say an Obama were to call up 75,000 troops to wage war on North Carolina for opposing gay marriage or some other great moral crusade.

Imitation being a the greatest form of flattery.

At least you tried despite the fact that Dixie was penned as a minstrel show tune by an Ohio yankee in the 1850s and isn’t a hymn in any fashion, certainly not a Unitarian example. By contrast Julia Ward Howe was married to the prominent Unitarian Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe and oddly enough did call her song a hymn. Go figure.

As for ‘Traitorism’ we have the example of King George on August 23 1775 condemning the colonials for

” arraying themselves in a hostile manner, to withstand the execution of the law, and traitorously preparing, ordering and levying war against us”

that “such rebellion hath been much promoted and encouraged by the traitorous correspondence, counsels and comfort of divers wicked and desperate persons “

such that “that not only all our Officers, civil and military, are obliged to exert their utmost endeavours to suppress such rebellion, and to bring the traitors to justice, but that all our subjects of this Realm, and the dominions thereunto belonging, are bound by law to be aiding and assisting in the suppression of such rebellion, and to disclose and make known all traitorous conspiracies and attempts against us”

Traitorism is never popular among rulers and believers in the divine right of kings. It’s easy to understand the position of George and Abe without agreeing with them.

It’s amusing how lost cause losers such as yourself attempt to analogize the Revolutionary War with the Civil War. It is true that in both instances there was rebellion, but in the first case rebellion was used as a last resort against demonstrable tyranny. In the case of the Civil War the insurrectionists took to rebellion as the first resort.

What’s not amusing are the neo-yankee hatemongers who are helping the likes of Obama to strip the South of its history.

But then had the colonials lost the war they would be doing the same to George Washington and other “traitors” like maybe Andrew Jackson... but then they already are.

“What would have made Southern slave owners give up slavery?”

Dunmore’s Proclamation. The Philipsburg Proclamation. Both would have ended American slavery nearly 90 years earlier.
