Voting is under way in a historic referendum on whether the UK should remain a member of the European Union or leave. A record 46,499,537 people are entitled to take part, according to provisional figures from the Electoral Commission. Polling stations opened at 07:00 BST and will close at 22:00 BST. It is only the third nationwide referendum in UK history and comes after a four-month battle for votes between the Leave and Remain campaigns. In common with other broadcasters, the BBC is limited in what it can report while polls are open but you can follow the results as they come in across the BBC after polls close on Thursday evening.

I'm in a pessimistic mood - the bookies and the markets are apparently telling us remain is certain to win. The polls are all over the place however, and reports of postal voting suggest a big lead for leave but this could be conjecture. Maybe there is some hope - but will it even be free and fair? Who knows.
I thought I would create a thread for the day - I've been a proud freeper for years, because ours is such a dying nation I have had so little hope, but America always inspires me and I truly believe you have a lot of fight left in you. Today will show whether we have any at all. Please pray for our independence - our freedom from a radical left wing tyranny. If we stay - Turkey will join, and then its all over. It may even already be too late.

Polling Cards in Hand ,off we go.
What time will it be in the US when the Brexit results are in?
Nonbinding referendum. Have fun!
If leaves wins, we will 100% be leaving the EU.
You will probably know around 10pm EST, bbut official results in about midnight 1am EST.
Results programme starts at 10pm our time, so 5pm yours - there is a poll being released at that time but not an ‘exit poll’
Glad you created the thread, Hopefully it can serve as live thread throughout the day.
Though no news of any kind will be reported until late in the evening GMT.
Sadly I share your pessimism.
The pound have been stable today, but the bookies odds are moving in the direction of stay.
Though, a poll should that 80 percent of Brits felt scared to express their real view on the issue due to political correctness, name calling and bullying.
That poll is the straw I am grasping at.
Good luck from Norway.
With you!
Nail biting time. Same here with Trump vs Clinton.
It’s now or never.
I’m hoping for a leave vote (as a joint Australian/British citizen not eligible to vote in the UK) but I agree it isn’t looking that likely. The murder of Jo Cox - which is a terrible thing - has probably swung the vote back to Remain.
But I don’t see this as the UK’s last chance - the Republicans in Australia didn’t shut up because of our 1999 Referendum (nor should they have if they believe in what they are standing for) and will push for another Referendum soon. The same will happen in the UK if it needs to.
If the EU had stayed as it was - a Common Market - if the EU would stay as it is now, it might have a hope. But the left will keep pushing it closer and closer to a super state and that will ultimately destroy it.
Zero Hedge had an interesting article on the bookmakers. Noting that very large bets were skewing the odds. Now, people who have a vested economic interest in Britain remaining within the EU wouldn’t jigger the betting odds for propaganda purposes, would they?
Prayers for the UK.
BTW. Did you think Boris was channeling Bill Pullman from the Independence Day movie last night? :)

Good and well written historical summary.
The backers of this project were never honest.
As a Norwegian I only started to catch on sometime after the treaty of Maastricht.
I’m praying for your Independence Day !
Best of luck today.
If you win, go on out and order toad in the hole, and raise a glass of Newkie Brown in a toast to Donald Trump.
Good luck, thanks for the thread, will be checking in often, hoping for a leave victory.
That is truly shocking. And we know which direction that works - the left have always been louder, this is true across the world. The right must fight fire with fire if we are to survive.
My hopes and best wishes are with you.
Definitely is - Naturally I am at work, but I cant concentrate, I cant focus on anything else today.
Ironic. The UK is “rebelling”. Wants to break away from the Empire and claim Independence.
