Senate GOP Rebuffs Trump on Gun Control Call
News Max ^ | June 17, 2016

Donald Trump — already the bane of many establishment Republicans — is now in a new battle with the GOP rank-and-file over gun control measures.

The Washington Post reports that Trump's surprise call for congressional action on new gun-control legislation is getting the cold shoulder from his party and likely pit GOP lawmakers against their presumptive presidential nominee.

The new wrinkle comes as Capitol Hill tries to cope with calls for new gun laws in the wake of Sunday's attack in Orlando, in which a gunman with terrorist allegiances killed 49 people and injured 53 at a crowded nightclub.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, an Alabama Republican and Trump supporter, told The Post: "There's nothing wrong with [Trump] trying to energize the discussion on it and work out something that would be healthy and that we can all agree on."

I didn’t say that there was anything wrong with it.

I personally do not support such a thing, because as soon as we empower our government to fight terrorists, our government uses that power against normal, innocent Americans, and does nothing against terrorists.

If someone is a terrorist, then that person should be deported or stripped of their citizenship and then exiled from America forever.

There is no reason that terrorists should not be tolerated in our midst, because they can use anything to kill, not just our guns.

It should also be noted that this person was not on any terror watch list.

They’re as funny as can be.

But on a serious note,if Trump were as leftist as some claim, he’d have some major liberal endorsements. Instead, liberals react to him with unfiltered horror.

Hmm.

Yup. The k street whores, gubbermint parasites and anal remoras that comprise the kabuki party in D.C. don't know what to do. Sending out the has-been omuslim trolls is all they got left.

I think he said guns should not be sold to persons on the terrorist watch list. I agree.

And just like that, with no due process, an unelected, unaccountable bureaucrat has added you to the terrorist watch list because you post on a right-wing web site. And you have no recourse available to you.

Do NOT be a useful idiot for the enemy, and allow them to re-frame this into a gun-control argument, and allow our rights to be subject to the whims of a bureaucrat.

Establish a law that people on the terror watch list cannot buy guns and by the middle of the following week every registered Republican in the US will be on the terror watch list.

Bears repeating for the low-IQ portion on FR, who are willing to let the left re-frame Islamic Jihad into stealing our 2nd amendment rights.

The problem is, there are huge number of people on the No Fly List with common Anglo names who are NOT terrorists and, by extension, EVERYONE in the country who shares the same, common name is also on the No Fly List.

There have been a number of threads about this problem on the frequent flyer web site, flyertalk.com, over the years.

Anyone named David Nelson, including the now late son of Ozzie and Harriet, is on that list. Somewhere, someplace a guy named David Nelson is wanted for something, so viola, by extension, everyone with that name is on the list. And what the original person is wanted for many times has nothing to do with the safety of civil aircraft.

Also anyone named Jack Baldwin, Alexandra Hayes, and countless other common Anglo names are on that list.

A number of years ago, “60 Minutes” had a group of 10 or 12 people who shared these common names on a segment of their show. None of these people were barred from boarding a plane, but they have to go through time-consuming, intrusive extra “security” for the “privilege,” and off miss their flight.

The Dept. of Homeland Security, a Stasi in the making, considers veterans, gun owners, Christians, TEA Party people, etc. to be a threat. Are they going to decide who gets to buy a gun, and who is on the list? And how does one get off this stupid list if they are put on it unjustly?

I have no problem with Trump talking with the NRA.....I’m sure they aired their concerns clearly.

That’s ironic, because private sales had nothing to do with what happened in Orlando or Sandy Hook.

It was my understanding that Trump is going to talk to the NRA concerning their remark yesterday that they, the NRA is in favor of a no fly/no buy provision. I think that Trump is mostly concerned with due process issues.

You have that exactly backwards. It's Trump that wanted to talk to the NRA about a gun buy ban for those on the terror watch list. Choose your source.

And it was the NRA which said they'd be glad to explain "due process" to that idiot moron leftist Donald Trump. Choose your source.

As I wrote in another thread, put terrorists on No Fly List, make list transparent, establish an appeal process or due process for US citizens. And, yes, no reason why terrorists on the No Fly list not banned from buying guns.

Latest terrorist not on list? True. Worse, he worked on a government contract even though government had more than once tagged him for terrorist ties and so forth. Incompetence. A few people should be identified and fired.

So, what exactly did Trump say? Or are you just taking the Washington Post’s word for it?

The moron, in his own words:

"I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns."

The NRA's response:

Happy to meet @realdonaldtrump. Our position is no guns for terrorists—period. Due process & right to self-defense for law-abiding Americans

You morons voted for a gun-grabbing Democrat. God help us!

Republicans won’t be slaughtered on the issue if they stick to what the Constitution calls for in this case: DUE PROCESS. Just because someone is on a government list doesn’t mean they should automatically forfeit a constitutional right. There needs to be arbitration by a neutral judge.

The only hope we have is to get something in return, not just keep giving up our rights incrementally for nothing.

I can’t think of anything worth ‘giving up our rights incrementally’ for. We barely have any left anyway.

Our God-given and Constitutionally protected rights are not bargaining chips. At least they shouldn’t be.

You are out of order.

I have directly quoted Trump, and directly quoted the NRA's response. I don't care that you don't like it, it's the truth. If you don't like the truth, that's your issue, not mine.
