SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL PREVIEW

SCHUBERT: PIANO TRIO IN B-FLAT, D. 898

This July 18 performance features James Ehnes on violin, Clive Greensmith on cello and Inon Barnatan on piano. I saw Inon play this piece in Vancouver a few months ago.

Schubert’s absorption of what Beethoven had achieved was stalled by the fact that his teacher, Tony Salieri, thought that everything Beethoven had written after the Second Symphony had been a waste of music paper. Tony’s death in 1825 sent Frannie into a crash course on Beethoven, and the two piano trios written in the last two years of his life show what he had learned.

The first movement, marked “allegro moderato,” starts with a theme tuneful enough to only be Schubert, but he uses Beethoven’s stop-and-start technique to break it into fragments. At 2:06 he introduces his second subject in F Major. A stop-and-start returns to the exposition repeat at 4:09. Development starts at 8:18 in the minor as the first subject is dissected. The second subject is developed in E-flat, then the minor, and then it leads into the recap at 11:10 in G-flat, the wrong key, but Frannie maneuvers it back to B-flat just in the nick of time. The second subject appears in the correct key of B-flat. The coda is based on the first subject, executes a false ending, turns dark, and then wraps with a bang.

The second movement, marked “andante un poco mosso,” is in E-flat, and it’s one of Schubert’s greatest slow movements, non-stop song. The central panel turns dark for a bit before brightening. The first section returns, first in a series of wrong keys, and then in E-flat. The wrap up will make your screen blurry.

The third movement is a scherzo marked “allegro” in B-flat. It’s something of a fast minuet. The central “trio” section moves to E-flat for a slight rhythmic shift. The first section returns.

The finale, marked “allegro vivace,” is in rondo format, so you’ll hear that first subject a lot. At 39:19, the tune goes into G-flat. You may have noticed that Schubert uses G-flat in this piece as his “go to” wrong key, even bringing the first subject back in that wrong key. At 42:12 we’re back in correct key, although in the minor. At 44:40 we’re off on a wrong key again, but it’s a short detour. The coda at 45:39 puts the pedal to the metal for a killer ending.
