Pierce’s niece,Margaret Herrick, was the librarian for Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, when she used the name “Oscar” for the award statue, because it reminded her of her uncle Oscar Pierce, in 1931.
The first recorded use of the name was by columnist Sidney Skolsky, who was supposedly present when Margaret used the term in reference to her uncle Oscar, but he made it famous in his report on the 1934 Awards when he used the term to describe the statue. In his memoirs written in 1975, Skolsky said the name “Oscar” came from the old vaudeville joke line “Will you have a cigar, Oscar?” because he could not spell the word “statuette” when he wired his report from Hollywood on award night.
