The Philadelphia City Council on Thursday voted 13-4 in favor of a bill that became known as the soda tax. It will impose a 1.5-cent tax per ounce for soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages include fruit drinks, sports drinks, flavored water, and energy drinks. The tax goes into effect at the beginning of next year. Notably, it excludes baby formula, any product that has a base that is majority milk, and some other healthier offerings predetermined by the city.

Remember the cop shows from the 80’s. Before going out on the streets they met with the precinct captain in the squad room. I imagine this scenario happening in a Philadelphia PD precinct.
Captain: “ Listen up officers. We have a hot tip that someone is bringing a mini van full of coke into the city today. we have alerted SWAT and all surrounding precincts.”
Wide eyed rookie cop: “ Wow captain , this will be the largest cocaine bust in the history of the city.”
Captain: “ Not cocaine!!! Coca Cola. We have reason to believe the suspect is a woman aged 30 to 40 years old and may be traveling with some children.
According to the article, it is a per ounce (of beverage) tax. So you get taxed even if the soda is free.
Big Brother has “predetermined” what a “healthier offering” is.
Add an even higher tax on bottled water, baby formula, coffee, and tea (bottled or not) and see what the taxing authorities think about that.
since they talk about sugar drinks, will they tax diet soda?....
This will have epic unintended consequences for which they will disavow any responsibility.
soda stream.....get a soda stream machine and make your own carbonated beverages....it has to be a ton cheaper...
Have your groceries delivered from out of the city and they will shove the tax.Order 20 cases and you will be potentially rich.
Diet drinks ARE included
You mean the poor with EBT will pay it.
YOU will pay it.
Well, it sounds like Philadelphia isn’t a “stupid” desert!
This will again “not” produce the funds projected. Many are close enough to the suburbs. And they won’t just go there for soda either. Full shopping orders will also move out. Super markets will be treated like the corner gas stations or 7-11. Wow, just Wow, the over all losses down the line will or could be staggering.
It’s a lush tropical garden!
Very Creative!
I spent a month in Philadelphia. It was the longest year of my life.
The thieves will not tax fountain drinks by cup. They will tax the syrup containers that the drink mix is made from.
November and December will see some residents buying big reserve stocks of drinks for their houses. Some businesses will do the same.
Vending machine owners will have to change machine prices.
The spineless poobahs at the drink companies should stop marketing there but that will never happen.
I would really, really like to see the drink industry STOP ADVERTISING IN PHILADELPHIA.
No ad money to TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, websites, sports stadiums, billboards or anywhere else.
Owners of those places would be after Kenny and gang with torches and pitchforks.
Sadly we know that the spunkless clooneys of the drink industries would not have the guts.
I heard on the radio this morning that diet sodas will be taxed.
Soda is one of the most profitable items for fast-food and convenience stores. It's going to hurt local businesses and in turn increase unemployment.
No, YOU will pay it. The 'poor' will use their EBT cards that YOU provide them.
This will unexpectedly backfire when pissed off people stop buying cokes at convenience stores and city groceries and start buying them in the burbs. Convenience stores make the majority of their profit selling drinks - will likely put some out of business.
