Still don't buy it. They wouldn't have needed to do that from the east coast of the US and risk being discovered before the event. They could have done it from closer to their home and not risk discovery.

I have been told by my source that we did discover who did it. It was former Iranian military personnel, hired by a wealthy and prominent family in Iran, to avenge the death of their relatives which were killed in the USS Vincennes incident.

It was supposedly the action of "rogue agents" and not sanctioned by the government of Iran.

My source tells me that the Iranians assured the US officials with whom they were in contact about the incident, that they would deal forcefully with the people involved.

We had all sorts of commercial flights in and around the middle east and Europe that were more tempting targets.

That would only send the message that the middle east is a dangerous place. I believe the intent was to demonstrate that they could hurt us right in our own airspace.

If it was a larger missile, how did we miss it?

How did we miss it? Who was looking for it prior to it being fired? After it was fired I expect the boat high tailed it out of there.

The terrorist angle still doesn't seem right

It sounds more reasonable to me than the idea there was an 80 joule ignition source in the fuel tank.

I have no way of confirming or denying your version and it does sound somewhat plausible and even deniable from Wash DC standpoint. However, it also sounds like a plot to a Tom Clancy novel, if he was still alive. And, if true a lot of people should now be in jail. Thanks.
