And all this is made vastly easier by a gun lobby that has blocked sensible safety measures at every turn I don't believe I have EVER seen the US Congress seriously consider ANY sensible legislation regarding firearms.

I guess the NRA must have had a presence in both France and Belgium, concerning the recent violence there as per the NYT’s logic.

"I don't believe I have EVER seen the US Congress seriously consider ANY sensible legislation regarding firearms."
At this point, the only sensible legislation would:
- Establish that carry, both open and concealed, would be legal in every state, unless the state required a permit for carry.
- Require that any carry permit system be non-discretionary, with objective standards for issuance.
- Require that every state recognize every other states' carry permits.
- Require that any public venue that chose to ban guns must:
- Control access, with security and metal detectors at every entrance.
- Provide armed security, to protect those that their policies have disarmed.
- Provide secure storage for the firearms of visitors who are not being allowed to enter.
