Top conservatives meet at secret dinner to discuss Cruz's future
The Hill ^ | 6/15/2016 | Jonathan Swan

Posted on 06/15/2016 3:42:55 PM PDT by lodi90

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) attended a confidential dinner with more than 20 top conservatives on Tuesday night to plan his comeback as a movement leader in the mold of Ronald Reagan.

The dinner was at the Virginia home of conservative activist Brent Bozell, and the agenda was to plot Cruz’s future and the future of the conservative movement. The undertone of the dinner was about how to position Cruz for a future tilt at the presidency and to spearhead the conservative movement from his seat in the Senate, those in attendance said.

Dining with Cruz and his chief of staff, Paul Teller, were some of the most powerful figures in the conservative movement.

The spectrum of economic, national security and social conservatives seated at the table included Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, Club for Growth President David McIntosh, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie, National Rifle Association board member and former Cincinnati Mayor Ken Blackwell, and Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, sources confirmed.

According to those in attendance, the leaders discussed how they could work more effectively together and how to harness their vast financial and human networks in the service of conservative principles and Cruz's career.

Combined, those at the table have access to hundreds of millions of dollars and some of the largest ground armies on the right.

There was no specific discussion of electoral politics or whether Cruz will support presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this cycle.

Many of the leaders at the dinner want Cruz to run for president again, and they are viewing Cruz’s unsuccessful 2016 run as similar to Reagan’s failed attempt in 1976 to unseat the incumbent Republican president, Gerald Ford.

>The game is not played that way. In any event, if Trump had betrayed himself as a traitor after making the pledge, certainly Cruz would be relieved. The principle stands, the pledge is conditioned on civil behavior by the nominee. Do you expect the Democrats to continue to support Hillary if she is indicted? Of course not, even among Democrats the behavior of the nominee relieves the pledgee.

So many excuses for Ted utter lack of honor.

Why, yes you do!

So many excuses for Ted utter lack of honor.

Are you utterly incapable of recognizing your own hypocrisy? How do you define the insinuations of murder of the President of the United States of America which are utterly without factual foundation and cynically made to advance one's personal political ambitions? Honorable?

How many votes for Trump will you win by advancing this definition of "honor?"

These so called “conservatives” have achieved absolutely nothing.

Precisely.

They still call each other "movement" conservatives -- what have they moved? Not a damn thing.

Lying Ted Cruz will forever be a POS to 3/4 of Republican primary voters who saw his true colors this election.
He doesn’t have a future outside the state of Texico and can return to giving illegal immigrants teddy bears at the border.
He will forever be remembered by many Republicans for siding with BLM, MOVEON, and Soros. More than will ever associate his underhanded, scheming, and yes LYING WAYS with someone like Ronald Reagan. It’s an absolute insult to the President’s legacy and all he stood for to compare him to this human piece of excrement.

You are conflating ovemment conservatives with the party establishment.

Two totally different groups. The party establishment dislikes movement conservatives as much as they detest Trump.

“I wouldn’t vote for Cruz after what he’s shown himself to be this election cycle. They better start to look elsewhere, those with all those vast resources not being spent to help elect Trump.”

Agree.

You mean like something you better figure out how to do before the pack of hyenas set upon you and your family?

Nicely explains why getting behind Trump 100% is so crucial. Thanks.

Nice, entropy12:

Your comment shows that nothing has really been achieved by the current "conservatives" in power.

It's the very definition of entropy: lack of order or predictability; gradual decline into disorder.

Great. Well-stated. Cruz is NO Ronald Reagan.

And I would add that Ronald Reagan was a man of accomplishment. He was governor of California for many years. He had been tested under fire.

Reagan didn't just talk about policies, he lived it and was held accountable in office.

With Cruz and Rubio, all you were really voting for was the words they said. And both of them wildly vacillated on the key issue of this election: illegal immigration.

With Cruz and Rubio you get talking puppets. With Reagan and Trump, you get tested and proven men.

Trump mentioned this just yesterday. He said that if the GOP does not get behind him, he will go it alone as far as platform and direction.

He has shown the light on the uniparty, and they are scrambling like roaches.

I saw a thread here several days ago that said gop.com refused to acknowledge Trump, and I thought it was a lie. I went to the site (as you probably did) and, boy, was I shocked.

I have repeatedly supplied Cruz supporters with an example of a vile, repulsive, vicious, one-hundred percent, clear and incontrovertible lie. Incredibly, it hasn’t fazed even a one of them. As a result many, like me, have simply given up. If Cruz supporters had one scintilla of objectivity, they could see the lies for themselves. As it is, they can’t see them when they are laid out simply and obviously, for all the world to see. Amazingly, despite all that, they keep asking for examples. I’ve concluded it’s a mental illness. That may sound harsh, but that is my honest take.

One can but sympathize with your plight, endlessly confronted as you've no doubt are with paranoid Cruz supporters who cannot be reasoned with, who insist on dealing with facts, who persist in nagging, nagging nagging, yeah begging even for one measly example.

Small wonder you spend a very long paragraph lamenting of their condition rather than feeding them one morsel, one little tidbit of genuine fact because you know it will only stimulate their addiction for more. No doubt you are doing it for our own good.

Alas, science even in the twenty-first century has not yet found a cure for the lamentable mental disorder which afflicts these wretched Cruz supporters.

Pass me the Ritalin.

This lie I’m referring to was such a vicious whopper, Cruz supporters should have been able to see it for themselves. The fact that not one ever did has to mean something. I’ve got my theory on it, and it seems best to fit the facts. And I say that as a one time HUGE Cruz fan . I just never got to the point of losing all objectivity. That’s why I’m a former Cruz supporter.

Ben Sasse is a perfect example of pretend conservative. Able to hit every hot button conservative issue in order to get elected, then cr@p on the loyal people he fooled.

They should be spending their time getting Trump elected. Hillary will legalizing 50 million new citizens and once done, conservatives won’t win anything higher than a dog catcher.

California was the test case for mass legalization and the Republican party can’t even get enough votes to a run a senator in this state. The same will happen in every state in the union.

Exactly. And Cruz & supporters actions now show that the Cruz campaign was never about principle and genuine conservatism.

The stakes could not be higher. We had 50 Americans dead in the street a few days ago. Dems are on the warpath and the kenyan is going to Orlando to verbally assault us again today. And these principled conservatives (TM) are totally MIA. How principled and conservative of them.
