Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) attended a confidential dinner with more than 20 top conservatives on Tuesday night to plan his comeback as a movement leader in the mold of Ronald Reagan.
The dinner was at the Virginia home of conservative activist Brent Bozell, and the agenda was to plot Cruzs future and the future of the conservative movement. The undertone of the dinner was about how to position Cruz for a future tilt at the presidency and to spearhead the conservative movement from his seat in the Senate, those in attendance said.
Dining with Cruz and his chief of staff, Paul Teller, were some of the most powerful figures in the conservative movement.
The spectrum of economic, national security and social conservatives seated at the table included Heritage Foundation President Jim DeMint, Club for Growth President David McIntosh, direct-mail guru Richard Viguerie, National Rifle Association board member and former Cincinnati Mayor Ken Blackwell, and Susan B. Anthony List President Marjorie Dannenfelser, sources confirmed.
According to those in attendance, the leaders discussed how they could work more effectively together and how to harness their vast financial and human networks in the service of conservative principles and Cruz's career.
Combined, those at the table have access to hundreds of millions of dollars and some of the largest ground armies on the right.
There was no specific discussion of electoral politics or whether Cruz will support presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump this cycle.
Many of the leaders at the dinner want Cruz to run for president again, and they are viewing Cruzs unsuccessful 2016 run as similar to Reagans failed attempt in 1976 to unseat the incumbent Republican president, Gerald Ford.

Conservatives don’t vote for a bill that leads to the destruction of American manufacturing.
I am ashamed to admit they managed to hoodwink even me! No more! I am all in for Trump because he is least likely to be bought by the ultra-rich donor class. Every body else cannot survive the elections without their rich donor class.
Putting the cart ahead of the horse. They’re assuming that the narcissistic twit is going to be re-elected to his senate seat in 2018.
The first two words out of Cruz’s mouth for months was “Donald Trump......”.
This Cruznadian doesn’t care that he’s trying to hand the election to Hillary. That’s why he sided with the GOP Establishment. It’s their goal.
He lost me when he blamed Trump, continually, for the “mistresses” leak, when everyone knew it came from the Rubio camp. But Rubio had dropped out by that time, so it wasn’t useful to blame Rubio. Shoddy.
Cruz has demonstrated that he’s an unelectable jerk, and a globalist.
Cruz has shown he is a man of low ethics who places his own personal ambitions ahead of his fake conservative principles.
I started out with him my favorite this primary season but as he exposed his true nature I lost any interest in seeing him elected.
Would I ever vote for him in the future?
Sure - if the choice was Cruz or a person like Obama or Hillary but not otherwise.
As long as he doesn’t try to run for President again.
Cubanadians are not eligible.
Yep.
As we say in New England re: Ted Cruz speaking style,
IMWICHHOO.
I do hope there is a role for Cruz in the conservative
movement and that he will run for president in 2020.

Are you saying Trump won’t win in 2016 and that Cruz will
be the GOP candidate against Hillary?
Sorry Ted, you are NO REAGAN. Reagan had CLASS when times got tough. You’ll be lucky to get re-nominated for Senate in 2018, much less hold the seat - given your behavior this year.
The number 40 means ‘probation’, Cruz has only begun to wander around in the wilderness. It is nothing other than propaganda, by these laziest of God creatures, ‘top conservatives’... attempting to paint Ted Cruz as the ‘new’ and improved Reagan. They are more like a witches coven feasting off the US host, hoping and praying they can find a perfect opening to do things their way.
I knew Ronald Reagan
I voted for Ronald Reagan
Ted Cruz, you are NO Ronald Reagan
Go home and hug your kids if they will let you touch them
Goodness no. I'm strictly a paleo-conservative.
I haven't the foggiest clue what Trump is though.
Like you said, I'm uninformed and stupid.
Which is exactly their goal. Feed the insatiable ego of Cruz (or feed his sanctimonious belief that he's The Anointed One, your call), and then "use" him to make Trump lose. Pump Cruz and his fellow globalist wife full of rainbows and sunshine and remind them of how Trump=Satan, and there ya go.
Cruz doesn't even have to know what they're doing. Because in his mind, he doesn't CARE. If a convention floor rules change doesn't work, then sabotage Trump all summer by pounding him on whatever gun compromise Trump may make with the Dems. Then run again in 2020. For Cruz, it's a win-win. For the GOPe, it's also a win-win.
#NeverCruz #AlwaysTrump
BTW, have y'all ever watched the NeverTrump cabal on Twitter? It's great entertainment. lol!
“true conservative” is synonymous with “stockholm syndrome conservative” Or perhaps we should call them “gulag conservatives.” Yeah, they might be marched off the to gulag, but gosh they’re terribly, terribly principled conservatives.
Cruz is assuming Trump will suffer a Goldwater type loss. The question is what to do then?
There are three models.
1. The Reagan strategy. Fight as hard as you can for Goldwater and come out looking loyal to the true believers.
2. The Rockefeller strategy. Wipe your hands of Goldwater and go home.
3. The Nixon strategy. Travel the country tirelessly campaigning for House and Senate candidates.
Nixon beat Reagan in the 1968 primaries so I would bet that Cruz will choose the Nixon strategy.
