Florida Rep. Alan Grayson used the aftermath of Sunday’s Islamic terror attack to claim AR-15 semi-automatic rifles can fire 700 rounds per minute.
Security guard Omar Mateen killed 49 people and wounded over 50 others during an attack on a gay nightclub — the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Mr. Grayson, a Democrat, was asked about the massacre and soon turned his attention to the AR-15 rifle.

“If [Mr. Mateen] was not able to buy a weapon that shoots off 700 rounds in a minute, a lot of those people would still be alive,” the congressman said. “If somebody like him had nothing worse to deal with than a Glock pistol … he might have killed three or four people and not 50. It’s way too easy to kill people in America today, and we have to think long and hard about what to do about that.”
CNN’s Erin Burnett then replied, “You’re right about that.”
Conrad Close, the conservative editor in chief of American Crossroads, then offered $50,000 to the charity of Mr. Grayson’s choice if he accomplish the feat,

Although it’s unknown where Grayson pulled out the magic 700 rounds per minute number, he is likely referring to the capability of a fully automatic rifle, which we already explained, an AR-15 is not. An AR-15 is semi-automatic, just like the Glock that Grayson referenced ironically. As such, it requires one pull of the trigger for every shot fired. Automatic weapons, such as what it seems Grayson is confusing the AR with, are heavily restricted at the federal level.
To be fair, you can find several videos on YouTube which show gun owners using a “slide fire stock” or “bump fire stock” on AR-15 rifles. This appears to increase the fire rate dramatically, but 700 per minute is still farfetched since the ATF found the add-on doesn’t turn a semi-automatic rifle into a machine-gun. If it did, the devices would be illegal. Regardless, there is no evidence presently that the Orlando shooter used any such modification during his Islamic terror attack.
As we see with any shooting, gun-gabbing legislators will make any attempt to demonize the weapon used. It will be worse this time since the killer’s motivation was fundamental Islam and the leftists have an aversion to pointing out any facts regarding Islamic terror. Instead, they will use words like “assault weapon” and throw around these frightening numbers — both of which are incorrect.
An AR-15 is a civilian weapon, meaning it is semi-automatic. It is not a “military style” or “assault” rifle. This may sound repetitive, but these facts are important. The liberal leftists want those who are uninformed to believe that everyday civilians are able to run around with military weapons when that’s simply not the case at all.
It is their goal to demonize something for a political agenda and misconstrue the guns and the public on the Second Amendment. Therefore, it must be our goal to correct it, to educate, and to spread the truth. Their lies can’t go unchallenged or unchecked. Unfortunately, Grayson’s little clip has already been seen and believed by too many who don’t know a thing about guns. Now, it’s time to make sure it’s heard with the correct information.
