AUSTIN, Texas -- A Texas high school valedictorian who described herself as "undocumented" in a tweet touting her academic accomplishments said she didn't intend to cause offense.
"My tweet wasn't made to mock anyone. I just wanted to show that no matter what barriers you have in front of you, you can still succeed," Mayte Lara told the Austin American-Statesman on Wednesday.
Lara graduated June 3 from Crockett High School in Austin. The 17-year-old's tweet read: "Valedictorian, 4.5GPA, full tuition paid for at UT, 13 cords/medals, nice legs, oh and I'm undocumented."
The tweet went viral and generated a barrage of negative comments online, most calling for her to leave the country and expressing anger at her University of Texas scholarship.
"First and foremost, I can fully admit that I should've been more cautious about my word choice, especially in these times where everything you say gets twisted and bashed on," she said in a statement to CBS affiliate KEYE. "However, I don't deserve the harassment I've been receiving and I should be proud of where I come from."
Lara said she was unprepared for the backlash and decided to deactivate her account "in attempts to ignore the harmful comments," she said.
"It was a common trend on twitter to highlight your success through a tweet like that, and I saw many other students from across the country doing the same and sharing the things they'd overcome, so I thought I'd share mine," she said to KEYE.
Measurable intelligence has absolutely nothing to do with this.
I am not “offended,” I am pissed off that this twit chose to twitter an “in your face” comment. She and her family should be deported.
It’s called backlash.....genius. Get used to it
I have found these kids today are not nearly as smart as we were with our education!!! I am astounded when people go out on the street to talk to them, these are college kids that are quite clueless!!! She will come out of Yale as a clueless HUGE liberal!!!
I seem to recall that when I enrolled my kids in school, at some point I had to show their “documentation”.
She’s not clueless. She’s a liar.
In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act
Why hasn’t this little pissant piece of criminal trash been deported yet?
B!tch, you made yourself a target. Deal with it while you’re standing in line near the school for your EBT/SNAP card.
Fine. Now return to Mexico, parasite. And pay back every peso you an your "undocumented" law-breaking family ever stole from America and our taxpayers when you illegally invaded our nation.
THEN GET IN LINE LIKE EVERY OTHER DESERVED LAW BIDING IMMIGRANT DOES.
You’d have only needed to say “no habla.”
You can say that again. I have witnessed 21-year-olds with college degrees, who are not even close to he level that my classmates and I were at in the fifth grade, when it comes to grammar and composition - not to mention spelling! It is breathtaking.
“Hard working, married, father, oh and White.”
Trying to walk it back now that she truly stepped in it.
To the clueless valedictorian:
Too late. You may be able to study and do well in class, but your understanding of how the world works is naive and silly.
If she´s smart enough to get into Yale, why is she so clueless?
well she’s a Liberal and those people are Insane
She stole the Salutatorian’s scholarship to UT.
When someone here illegally gets something (a job, scholarship, or government benefit) we forget that it means they took that from someone else.
UT automatically gives a scholarship to the valedictorian of every Texas high school.
In this case, because she jumped in line illegally ahead of others, she took the scholarship that should have gone to the salutatorian—a person that was here legally and playing by the rules.
Obviously, she had no barriers, she just lied her way thru them..
There are two illegals mentioned in the article. This one, Mayte Lara, who Tweeted like a Twit, is getting a full-ride to UT. The second one, Larissa Martinez, who didn’t cause the bluster and fury with a Tweet, but announced her status at her graduation ceremony, got a full-ride to Yale.
