Speaker Paul Ryans handling of Donald Trump is coming under criticism from Senate Republicans, many of whom prefer the way their leader, Mitch McConnell, deals with the unconventional candidate.
McConnell, the Senate majority leader from Kentucky, has steadfastly declined to call Trump's criticism of a federal judge racist, a term that Ryan (R-Wis.) pointedly deployed.
It sets up journalists to ask, Do you agree with Paul Ryan that it was racist? said an aide to a vulnerable GOP senator
Trump set off a firestorm last week by claiming that a Mexican-American federal judge handling a lawsuit against Trump University was biased because of his heritage.
Republican lawmakers on both sides of the Capitol swiftly expressed strong disapproval, but Ryan ratcheted up the criticism significantly by calling it the textbook definition of a racist comment.
Ryans remarks quickly became a Democratic talking point used to batter vulnerable Senate Republican incumbents.
This morning, Ryan called Donald Trumps attacks on Judge Gonzalo Curiel the textbook definition of racism. Will Johnson join Ryan in calling out Trumps racism? American Bridge, a Democrat-allied communications group, asked in a press release targeting Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), one of the chambers most endangered incumbents.
The group sent out similar releases pressing Republican Sens. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), Roy Blunt (Mo.), Mark Kirk (Ill.), John McCain (Ariz.), Rob Portman (Ohio) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) to condemn Trumps action as racist.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee on Wednesday sent an email to reporters highlighting a Tampa Bay Times article in which three Republican Senate candidates declined to go as far as Ryan.

That’s what I’m saying, I refuse to re elect Mike Lee (he backed Cruz and Romney) and I refuse to re elect Mia Love (she took half million dollars from a lobbyist after she said she wouldn’t while running for the House)
I will vote for the newby on the block, or not vote for them at all...
a little troubling that Trump hasn’t gotten rid of him as the chair at the convention yet. Come on Trump, clean house. We win without them or the win will be meaningless.
McCarthy’s endorsement of Trump is more real than Ryan
Go Nehlen, primary this mooselimb bass turd! ...
These days it’s extremely difficult for anyone to keep their job, yet more hours are spent during the day in order to do so.
How is Trump being racist?
‘McCarthys endorsement of Trump is more real than Ryan’
I haven’t seen it but I can well believe it. Plus I’ll say this: if McCarthy were the Speaker, he wouldn’t see his role as providing devastating ammo to the Dems. GOPe hack that he is, he’d still refrain from publicly calling his own party’s nominee a racist. (Especially since that charge happens to be a big, fat, stinking lie.)
I forgot Rush was off and downloaded the podcast of that show. I don’t usually download the sub-hosts. I listened to it while I was working out and that was probably the worst show I have ever heard. It was like listening to a liberal or elected Republican.
Moron party snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Rob Portman of Ohio? He is going to lose his seat this November to Ted Strickland (D). He has been a sell out from day one. Pi** on all of them.
All of them? No. But he could help candidates primary a lot of them.
Ryan will soon be extending and revising his remarks. The guy is tone deaf and stupid.
Trump for President.
Ironic.
Neither one of them are as harsh on Obama as they are on Trump.
Heheh. If I had one I would be twirling it.
EXEMPT pro-BAIN anti-voter liar Ryan must go,
and be primaried NOW.
Why would a candidate WHO LOST HIS OWN STATE
be allowed to run anything?
Answer: ObamaTRADE, ObamaCARE, BAIN
He’s a BAD as BONER.
For a state that is "hopelessly liberal" it has done a whole lot of conservative things these last few years. Concealed carry. Voter ID. Right to work. Defunding Planned Parenthood. Decertifying many public unions. Allowing blaze-pink camo for hunting.
Ok, maybe that last one is squishy.
IMHO, he’s the dumbest person in Washington. Makes sense, being that he’s been elected to lead the Stupid Party in the House.
