They had been out of service for over a year forcing visitors, especially older, elderly and handicapped to forgo a visit unless they hike down approximately 750 feet on a 1.25 mile path and then back up again. It really hurt the visitor count, especially since the area has been hard hit by the loss of jobs due to the decline in oil prices. They were said to be fixed at the end of May, but who knows - Obama may have to hike in and out. I'm sure he's fit what with all the time spent on the golf course.
My understanding is that the freight elevators are now operational, but the faster passenger elevators are still out of service. The Park Service may have changed the concessionaire, as well.
