There was a small ray of hope just after the Lehman collapse that one of the most lamentable characteristics of US society - the relentless urge to build massive McMansions (funding questions aside) - was fading. Alas, as the Census Bureau confirmed this week, that normalization in the innate American desire for bigger, bigger, bigger not only did not go away but is now back with a bang.
According to just released data, both the median and average size of a new single-family home built in 2015 hit new all time highs of 2,467 and 2,687 square feet, respectively.
And while it is known that in absolute number terms the total number of new home sales is still a fraction of what it was before the crisis, the one strata of new home sales which appears to not only not have been impacted but is openly flourishing once more, are the same McMansions which cater to the New Normal uberwealthy (which incidentally are the same as the Old Normal uberwealthy, only wealthier) and which for many symbolize America's unbridled greed for mega housing no matter the cost.
Not surprisingly, as size has increased so has price: as we reported recently, the median price for sold new single-family homes just hit record a high of $321,100.

In the end, it is no one else’s business. But it’s sad when a beautiful, older house is torn down - one that suits the neighborhood and adds a community feeling - and one of those hideous things go up, all out of proportion to its lot size. In my brother’s area in the San Fernando valley, all the ranch houses are being destroyed and these things are being built by Iranians and Arabs. And they have very gaudy taste.

Every time me and the wife go out to look for houses, almost every other couple we see looking for houses is Indian.

I saw Doctor Zhivago when it premiered. That scene where the local Bolsheviks seize the Gromyko house made me a permanent anti-communist. Give power-hungry people with little minds that kind of authority, and you have...something similar happening right here in the U.S.A.
The theme was that if you are not interested in revolution, it is interested in you. Zhivago & his wife were living quietly in a cottage near the Varykino house and the Bolshies still wouldn’t leave him alone.
Russians speaking with British accents creeped me out, too.
It’s one of those movies that everybody must see. I rate it as the greatest movie ever made.

To buy the median house at $321,100, with 100% financing at 4%/30 years, the monthly principal and interest comes out to $1,532.98. Add between $600 and $1,000 a month for property taxes and insurance. The family income required for the top of that scale is about $108,550 based on 28% of income. Well off, yes, but wealthy? No. And in some loan programs (40% total of all debt permitted) a low-debt family can buy that much house with a considerably lower income. With zero debt about $76,000.

It’s why the U.S. imports so many foreigner$. Many of them have big cash. They snatch up all these gawdy giant home$ and buy up all the McWhopper and greedy mart franchises, then double the prices...lol.
Plus importing all these millions from Ustinkistan et al, is an excellent way to divide our once united country.
