McMansions Are Back And They're Bigger Than Ever
Zero Hedge ^ | 02 June 2016 | Tyler Durden

Posted on 06/03/2016 11:53:15 AM PDT by Lorianne

There was a small ray of hope just after the Lehman collapse that one of the most lamentable characteristics of US society - the relentless urge to build massive McMansions (funding questions aside) - was fading. Alas, as the Census Bureau confirmed this week, that normalization in the innate American desire for bigger, bigger, bigger not only did not go away but is now back with a bang.

According to just released data, both the median and average size of a new single-family home built in 2015 hit new all time highs of 2,467 and 2,687 square feet, respectively.

And while it is known that in absolute number terms the total number of new home sales is still a fraction of what it was before the crisis, the one strata of new home sales which appears to not only not have been impacted but is openly flourishing once more, are the same McMansions which cater to the New Normal uberwealthy (which incidentally are the same as the Old Normal uberwealthy, only wealthier) and which for many symbolize America's unbridled greed for mega housing no matter the cost.

Not surprisingly, as size has increased so has price: as we reported recently, the median price for sold new single-family homes just hit record a high of $321,100.

I apologize if my comment was misunderstood - entirely my fault.

What I said had nothing whatsoever to do with "envy." I have a 3,500+ sq ft lovely home. I enjoy working in my gardens, planting, decorating, and having friends over.

What I don't like (and that's what I was referring to) are these cookie cutter garbage homes in massive subdivisions that are poorly constructed, and icons to narcissism.

“icons to narcissism.”

Spoken like a liberal. I know plenty of people that own such homes and they simply enjoy them. Nothing self centered about it. Seems you’ve been drinking the brainwash.

The tiny house trend has a terrible underbelly.

Many folks are spending much more than they thought on what are basically RV's or trailer trash homes on wheels. Then, when they get them built for 3 times the price they thought it would cost, find out that local zoning laws prohibit them from rolling in the "tiny house" even if they own the property.

If you think I am all wet - Google it.

All I can imagine from your comment is that you own a CrapMansion.

At what square-footage does a home become “godless”?

Lol. You got me there partner. Good one.

Square footage is not the point - just the bad Xerox home.

Looks like paint is in the future for that brick, whether they planned to paint it or not.

“-———infested with swarming hordes of apartment garbage.”

That is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever read on FR.

My mother rented an apartment her entire life-—and she wasn’t garbage.

These days, under Obama, apartment complexes are “swarmed” with Section 8 criminals. I should know. They drove me out of my old neighborhood. Do some research regarding what Obama is doing in terms of neighborhoods he deems too “white.”

I’m in my 80s and most of my friends sold their homes and are now renting 2BR apartments for about $3000.00 a month.Apartment garbage,indeed.:-)

The rest of us own condos and were DELIGHTED to get rid of the annoyances of single-home ownership.

And some owners bring nightmares-——we can’t call renters garbage just because some really ARE garbage.

Most aren’t.

Yes, but many are.

These are:

Glad many folks are making a cash flow rent check, but many of them are taking Federal Obama money that is trashing neighborhoods.

You understand.

Sounds so nice. 3000 sq feet is a really nice size. I don’t understand when I visit other places how they build homes over 5000 sq feet. How expensive are they to heat and cool? Sheesh.

Be great for the hunting lease?

My thought as well! (Except I can't even afford the lease.)

I do understand.

I’ve posted before that everyone in the USA should claim they are black in the next census——we can be anything to want to be. Right?

That would painlessly eliminate white suburbs.
