There was one star who didn’t need a teleprompter. Reagan would memorize his speeches or put the high notes on 3x5 cards and glance at them once in awhile.
George Bush rarely used the teleprompter also, using 3x5 cards. In some cases his speeches were totally impromptu.

I was in Iraq when Reagan died. We used the satellite reception of a French television station covering Bush’s eulogy to Reagan. The French piped in audio of a clear and forceful-voiced American man reading the transcript a second or two ahead of Bush. I’ve always wondered if they were adding the audio feed of a wireless cochlear implant or similar device.
Sarah Palin once used a few notes she had written on her hand. The press excoriated her for it.
