Washington (CNN) With the final primaries of the 2016 nomination season approaching, a new CNN Poll of Polls finds the candidates most likely to lead their parties into the general election are locked in a tight contest. Hillary Clinton holds an average of 45% support while 43% back Donald Trump across five recent nationwide polls of registered voters.
The Poll of Polls suggests a vastly different race than many anticipated.
Throughout March and April, public polling on the presidential race found Clinton well ahead of Trump, with the former secretary of state holding double-digit leads over the businessman in 10 out of the 14 polls that met CNN's standards for reporting in those months.
When Trump hits back, he hits back hard
A string of polls released in the last two weeks, however, suggest a much tighter contest. For the most part, those tightened margins come from a more unified Republican Party. Across the five polls included in the Poll of Polls, Clinton averaged 6% support among self-identified Republicans. Polls from the same organizations in late-March and April found Clinton averaging 12% support among Republicans.
What changed? Trump sealed the deal.

No one can see that far in the future-—Wait for the Trump-Hillary Debates. Wait for the Conventions? wait for the arrests and convictions. My Bet, Hillary will be forced to step aside —so too Bernie—for Biden/Warren Ticket (or someone else) maybe Biden/Sanders? It might be Hillary/Castro? or ??? Everything is so up in the air—no one can guess how it will all turn out. Trump/Sessions looks good—so to Trump/Christie or Trump/Carson.
Lets not get over-cocky here with talk of landslides. Remember that was the same garble when Romney ran in 2012.
Trump is way better I know— but there still is a very large contingent of utter morons and bad people who vote. We will still need a yuuuge GOTV for Trump in the general against Hellary or whoever.
Registered voters poll. Trump is ahead.
Registered voters. This is either an absolute tie or a slight Trump lead among likely voters.
We don’t want to get into that game this time around. I do believe that likely voters bring this dead even, but once we get into breakdowns of why this or that poll is unreliable, we get a Romney fiasco.
Trump can, and will, win this on his own. The only key is “undecideds,” because those will gradually go to DT.
My thoughts exactly. Those in the media bubble in the New York-Washington axis see things very differently than most of us do.
We were watching a movie on our DVR last night and when it finished it reverted to what was showing on the last station we had it on. It was a group of idiot leftists talking about Trump and the leader, a late night comedian who thinks he is a political pundit now, said that even Republicans now believe in Global Warming.
I said to my wife that it is probably just as well that they now believe their own propaganda despite observational data that disproves everything that they were saying. “Global Warming” is generally about the last thing that any survey shows the electorate is actually concerned about.
I can’t believe Trump is down 2pts. It shouldn’t even be a contest with him comfortably ahead.
Guys, if the MSMedia can only manage to create a 2 point lead, she’s in trouble.
