Speaking to CNN's Fareed Zakaria Sunday afternoon, Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens said that it was important for Donald Trump to lose the general election so utterly that the Republican party and its voters "learn their lesson" and never nominate someone like him ever again.
Stephens has been one of Trump's most outspoken conservative critics, writing in March, for instance, that Trump is essentially an amplified version of Barack Obama. Both men were "epic narcissists who see themselves as singularly suited to redeem an America that is not only imperfect but fundamentally broken," he wrote.
"The candidacy of Donald Trump is the open sewer of American conservatism," he wrote on another occasion.
"I most certainly will not vote for Donald Trump," Stephens told Zakaria, adding that he wanted to "make sure he is the biggest loser in presidential history" in a very long time.
Stephens continued: "It's important that Donald Trump and what he represents this kind of ethnic quote 'conservatism' or populism be so decisively rebuked that the Republican party, the Republican voters learn their lesson that they cannot nominate a man so manifestly unqualified to be president in any way, shape, or form."
So, Stephens thinks that the people need to be decisively rebuked for having the nerve to support Trump. The elitism of WSJ is suffocating. Oh dear, the people are not listening to the WSJ elite!
Is "ethnic conservatism" the new dismissive term for nationalism? Do they think it will undermine any thought of believing and supporting in America first? Will this stop populism? Does Stephens not believe in America? Where and when did his patriotism end?
I guess our lesson is supposed to be the current path or total economic collapse.
Breathtaking arrogance! Stephens and Beck and Levin and Krystal and Goldberg, among others ... all KNOW that they are superior to us, mere mortals.
I can only say that I would not shed a tear if I ever happened to read Bret’s Obituary.
Whatever he represents... America
>>Is “ethnic conservatism” the new dismissive term for nationalism?
Yes. The Globalists don’t want to be accused of not being patriotic as they sell our nation out for that last little bit of profit.
Cheap Labor, buy the Congress express. Bribes to sell out Americans So multi national corps. can ship jobs to the lowest wage countries.
These traitors don’t care that 94 million are out of the workforce, that record numbers are on food stamps. Their fellow Americans can fend for themselves in Hell as far as they are concerned.
These economic traitors, don’t want to bring jobs back.
They are happy wages are down , that take home is down $5k. They don’t want to see pay go up, because it hasn’t in 18 years for many people and if your working 2 jobs and still don’t have heathcare or pension because companies cut them out, too bad!!!
The Wall Street Journal is a part of the Ministry of Propaganda. They have been trying to convince us to give up our country without a fight.
Since they failed to get an amnesty candidate nominated for the first time since the last amnesty they now have to try to get Hillary elected.
Whatever it takes to prevent the citizens from electing a President who enforce the laws and borders.
The most important thing to the establishment is keeping the Cheap Labor Express running.
Yeah! You tell them rubes Stephen! We know what’s best for these schmucks!
Now let’s get out there and scrounge up another surrender monkey RINO who’ll lose gracefully to Hillary!
He’s a Kapo.
I’d rather the Democrats lose and learn their lessons.
I like to boil down screeds like these that are nearly fact free to their rhetoric-free essence. This one reads “I don’t like Trump, and I want to punish those who do”. Wish he came out and said that, and didn’t waste our time.
Wow, these people are really losing their minds
It’s not an echo chamber - it is a supercollider of groupthink.
Understand....
The establishment is in crisis mode. The number of meetings is astonishing. The only ones who are not reacting to their fear are the people.
Though a disappointed Cruz supporter who will nevertheless vote for Trump, it is to me a sign of bitterness and worse, troublemaking where enough troubles already exist for Stephens, et all, to relentlessly harp and carp. As for the phrase, “ethnic conservatism” it may be Stephen’s politically correct way of saying “white fascism.”
The lesson is we should never ever let neocons near any elected positions, they are the most dangerous enemies America faces, a wolf in a sheep clothing.
Used to read WSJ until I came to the realization that their radical open borders position was intended support of wage suppression. F’ em.
