As kid in the early fifties, the real treat after a full day at the old Smithsonian was at a soda fountain news stand. Fried chicken in a little gray cardboard box. The bottom was fully grease soaked by the time we walked home. Almost the best fried chicken ever. Fast food wasn’t even a concept back then. Closest things were the five and dime lunch counters and one or two of the big drug stores.

You have a few years on me, but I also remember when fast food restaurants were fairly novel.

Money was VERY tight in our house, and McD's allowed my mother to give us an occasional Saturday treat (along with matinee pricing at the old theater). She was grateful because she didn't feel obligated to leave a tip. Just order at the counter and take it to the table yourself.

"Here, wet this napkin at the water fountain so we can wipe the table for the next people."

It sounds so quaint nowadays. Fond memories.

You can still find a few Dairy Bars around. They were generally family owned places that specialized in soft-serve ice cream. Maybe they served hamburgers or hot dogs.
