I had thought that I was being required to input my passcode on my Apple iOS TouchID devices more frequently when they had been idle than I had before. Now I find I was correct. It turns out that in light of authorities forcing of people to unlock iOS devices using their fingerprints, Apple had quietly revised the TouchID requirement to input of the user's passcode to unlock the device instead of the user's fingerprint after a device has been unused for 48 hours to requiring the user's passcode after only eight hours lack of use as an upgraded security feature with the introduction of iOS 9 in the Autumn of 2015. — PING!

Touch ID and passcodes

To use Touch ID, users must set up their device so that a passcode is required to unlock it. When Touch ID scans and recognizes an enrolled fingerprint, the device unlocks without asking for the device passcode. The passcode can always be used instead of Touch ID, and it’s still required under the following circumstances:

• The device has just been turned on or restarted.
• The device has not been unlocked for more than 48 hours.
• The passcode has not been used to unlock the device in the last six days and TouchID has not unlocked the device in the last eight hours.
• The device has received a remote lock command.
• After five unsuccessful attempts to match a fingerprint.
• When setting up or enrolling new fingers with Touch ID.
