There was a big factory adjacent to Auschwitz but killing the Jews was not a sideline.

The factory, called Buna, manufactured synthetic rubber and oil. It was staffed with slave labor, but the Jewish prisoners who worked there eventually lived in a separate labor camp (Auschwitz-III/Monowitz) from the main Auschwitz extermination camp (Auschwitz-II Birkenau).
