Your words are quite charitable towards the *true* character of Mr. Lincoln.
I liken the *true* character of Mr. Lincoln more to the persona of a character concocted in the imagination of a close relative - the character; Bob Ewell.
Slavery was simply low lying fruit, a card in the deck at Mr. Lincoln’s disposal. Mr. Lincoln was possessed by a malignant spirit of which we’ve not seen on national politics until recently.
Bob Ewell and Mr. Lincoln could have swapped roles in life and fiction, respectively.
“Your words are quite charitable towards the *true* character of Mr. Lincoln.”
A really great read is that of freed slaves in the South. Many of them were NOT thrilled with Lincoln.

I hate to break it to you, lurker, but your cousin based "Bob Euell" on your dad.
