Councils across the UK are set to consider banning people who already own homes from buying holiday cottages after a historic vote yesterday.
More than 80 per cent of voters in St Ives, Cornwall, backed proposals that will mean new housing developments will only get planning permission if homes there are reserved for full-time residents.
And now councils in the Lake District, Derbyshire Dales, north Devon and the Isle of Wight are all looking at schemes to prevent outsiders buying holiday homes.
But ministers are poised to oppose the ban, saying it could be regarded as unfair and discriminatory.
Tory MP Mark Garnier told The Times: 'The only home I own is in St Ives but I live in rented properties elsewhere. Would it be considered as a second home?
'I worry that it is discriminatory - that one person can buy a home but another can't.'

Who are the Britain’s ?
They don’t hate their private property, they’re the good people after all. Just yours.
Freeing up places for immigrant settlement.
Does this mean the Queen has to give up Balmoral Castle?
I am sure after banning Brits from owning second homes the next step will be to give free houses to Muslim immigrants.
And a few dozen others!
And a few dozen others!
what does a single man need a 3 bedroom/2 bath house for????

Girlfriends????
Or "How is it that you have thirty grams of chocolate when we've just raised it to twenty?"
Good new: The homes that were occupied only one month a year by taxpayers will now be occupied 12 months a year by tax users.
I think there was an article like that last year, essentially slamming anyone who lived in a house by themselves.
Around here owners of non owner occupied property are called “ landlords”
If everyone can only own one house then who is going to have any to rent?
And btw the property taxes on 2d homes and rental homes are usually MUCH higher than on owner occupied homes
People who consume few local services subsidize the school’s parks police and fire departments
The empty houses are tax users as well. They require police patrols (perhaps large numbers of vacant homes require even more without watchful neighbors to reduce crime.) They require fire brigade protection. Water and sewage still have to run to those homes year round and the underlying infrastructure has to be maintained. Etc etc.
The sinple fact is that an empty house still requires resources that have to be paid for somehow. If you aren’t on the local tax rolls while still consuming resources then you are part of the problem. The percentage of holiday homes can only rise so high without requiring local changes to accommodate them.
The government needs to restrict ownership/confiscate property in order to give it to deserving Muslims.
>> ‘I worry that it is discriminatory - that one person can buy a home but another can’t. <<
A government that can restrict home ownership can restrict or demand anything it wishes. It’s called statism. And it’s coming to America.
The problem isn’t with landlords. Landlord and rental situations have their own arcane and extensive body of law in Britain. The problem is with Holiday Homes that have no residents on the local tax rolls and no local presence most of the year so they don’t contribute to sales taxes either.
This isn’t about wives, just homes. /rimshot
