Washington (CNN)Republican officials who oppose Donald Trump as their party nominee have spent the last few days -- ever since the withdrawal from the race of Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich -- wondering if there is anything they could have done to prevent this outcome. Top officials of the Cruz campaign are convinced there is one specific step that could have stopped Trump -- and they blame Sen. Marco Rubio for not taking that step.
In early March, it became clear that Trump was well on his way to the nomination and would even likely defeat Rubio in his home state of Florida's March 15 primary. According to several sources close to Cruz, the Cruz campaign conducted several secret polls to see what the impact would be if Rubio joined Cruz as his running mate, with Cruz at the top of the ticket.

Lol. Great scene from a great movie.
Cruz/Rubio.
The Campaign of the Ineligibles.
Cruz’ biggest mistake was hiring Jeff win-by-any-means/king-of-dirty-tricks Roe as his campaign manager. It was all downhill from there.
This story should take up at least half of Rush’s show tomorrow. He’ll be orgasmic over this. Don’t doubt me!
If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas...
Vote Trump!
Cruz and his surrogates are still running his dump on Trump smear campaign. Except now they are campaigning for the Butcher of Benghazi. How principled and conservative of them.
This guy is a real class act. Now he’s denigrating Fiorina...kinda like what McCain did to Palin.
Two ineligible candidates for the price of one.
Can I get large waffle fries with that?
It becomes more and more clear that Cruz has a judgment problem. And his isn’t very good.
From Beck in Iowa to this, Cruz and company have made some very poor decisions regarding the primaries.
He reminded folks of Ernie Angley.
Lesson learned: if you're a woman, never, EVER allow yourself to become any male GOPer's vice-presidential running mate.
They're like Ike Turner, in bad suits. ;)
Yeah, you could have stopped Trump with an all Hispanic Cuban immigrant lawyer ticket.
That’s some serious denial.
Yep. He heard Satan whispering in his ear to stoke his ambition and deluded himself into believing it was God.
For a candidate who spent a lot of time screaming that he wanted to go one-on-one with Trump, he sure knows how to make every possible excuse for losing. I guess this is his campaign to stay relevant .. I have no doubt that Cruz will try to primary Trump in 2020. The more he goes down this road, the worse for his career.
He still doesn’t get the one clear message the voters gave him...the more people saw him, the more they disliked him.
He could have been a contender!
Apparently cruz thinks we care and apparently he still thinks he’s relevant.
Instead of what he is...
“Wow. I guess it sucks to be iCarly.”
It did not take long to throw Carly under the bus.
