Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has a nearly 40-point lead over his competition in West Virginia, according to a Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.
Trump has 61 percent support in the Mountaineer State, which holds its GOP primary on May 10, and rival Ted Cruz follows with 22 percent. John Kasich comes in last with 14 percent.
Trump also has a high favorability rating among GOP voters in the state: 67 percent, while only 24 percent view him negatively.
Cruz and Kasich both have 32 percent favorability ratings. The Ohio governor is viewed negatively by 50 percent of GOP voters, and Cruz by 53 percent of voters.
According to the survey, 12 percent of voters say Cruz adding former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina as his running mate makes them more likely to vote for the Texas senator, and 31 percent say the addition makes them less likely to vote for Cruz. More than half say they don't care either way.
Trump is winning among independents planning to vote in the GOP primary, among moderates and "somewhat conservative" voters.
He is also leading among "very conservative" voters, though by a smaller margin.
In a general election match-up between Trump and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, Trump leads Clinton in West Virginia 57 to 30 percent. He also leads Bernie Sanders 56 to 35 percent. Cruz and Kasich also both lead the Democratic candidates in the state.
The poll was conducted among 1,201 West Virginia voters from April 29 to May 1. The margin of error is 2.8 percentage points overall. Among the sample of 549 likely Republican primary voters, the margin of error is 4.2 percentage points.
Newsflash, the primary is over, the general election has begun.
No doubt Cruz’s internal polls for future primaries were awful and played a roll in him bailing out.
News flash: General election poll included. Hillary getting her butt kicked in WV.
Interesting. Trump is already one point ahead of Bush’s 2004 numbers in WV and that’s with a ton of undecideds, which all come out of Hillary’s number, which is awful.
Yeah there was not a state left that Cruz would not have been the under Dog. Trump had a good chance at running the table.
Its a Red State.
WVA will go GOP in November.
Thanks Red, anything on Nebraska?
Hillaryous. Feel the burn, socialist Sanders.
Only part that matters in this article. Would like to see polls in other Blue States.
“Newsflash, the primary is over, the general election has begun.”
Tell that to Ted Cruz who is still out trying to steal delegates.
Right. Trump still needs those 1,237 and more to keep away from the hanky-panky from we know from who.
Good. Keep Trump from changing the abortion plank of the platform and wandering too far left. But the primary is over amigo. The liberal wing won again. Celebrate it.
WV is a solid R state. He better be winning there.
It is not over until Trump has over 1237. Everybody still needs to vote in the primaries for Trump or we have a brokered convention.
Other than news that a former anti-Trump big time Nebraska donor wants to endorse Trump, and news that the odds have Trump trending big in NE, no polls as of yet. Trump will take the state as it is a primary voting state. :-)
Yep and telling people it’s over so you don’t need to go and vote for Trump.
OK. Here is what I will do for ya. I will take Trump as the nominee for one hundred bucks and give you 5:1 odds.
Thanks Red, much appreciated!
