Video posted on YouTube shows a woman at a Walmart store loudly berating a man who was paying for his groceries with food stamps.
As a child sits in the mans shopping cart looking on, the woman complains about how she is paying for his food with her tax money.
NOTE: The description below, and video above, contains strong language.
You know, I put in 50-60 hour weeks... trying to provide for my family, the man says, although some of his words are unclear.
Youre not providing for it, I am, the woman snaps back. The government is.
Youre not, the man says.
They take it out of my check, the woman says. Bull**** they dont.
The man suggests she complain to her lawmaker or vote Republican.
Oh, trust me, I am not a bleeding heart f*****g liberal, the woman answers.
The rest of the clip contains a similar back-and-forth, punctuated with expletives. Both appear to be shopping with children.
Deal with it, b***h, the man says at one point.
At another point, the woman claims the man must be a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Thats exactly what you vote for, they give it to you so that you vote that way, the woman says.
i live in a sweet little town but i am surrounded by welfare-ites. i work 40 hours minimum a week and keep my yard spotless. the leeches, all with 3-5 obese kids, dont have jobs, stay home all day and let the weed seeds fly all over. their dogs shit in my yard, kids out swearing at each other, and the worthless parents come out when the sun goes down so as not to hurt their nocturnal eyeballs. what the heck do they do all day??
i understand this womans frustration completely..
...
Blame the politicians and the rest of the Ruling Class. This is the society they desire and have cultivated for the past 50 years. It’s not some kind of accident or something beyond their control.
It also depends on how many kids he has.
When hubby 4 years into his army career we had two babies and we were struggling.
I left the kids at home with my mom and went to the store. (Hubs was overseas and I was staying with her to save money)
She’d given me some money and asked me to pick up a carton of cigarettes for her since I was going. (I didn’t smoke.)
At the checkout, I separated the cigs from the WIC items and those from the foodstamp items.
The lady in line behind me ripped into me with everything that she had.
When I tried to explain that I was married and that my husband did work and that the cigarettes weren’t even mine, she just kept screaming over me.
The cashier probably never worked faster in her life.
After I was checked out, I headed to the door, then stopped and turned around. I bellowed that my husband is a United States Soldier and that he worked 60-70 hours a week. If there’s ANYTHING to be ashamed of it’s that he puts his life on the line for this nation and YOU (the people at the store) wouldn’t pay him enough to keep a family of four out of the poverty level. I finished with a big “SHAME ON ALL OF YOU FOR TREATING YOUR SOLDIERS THIS WAY,” and stormed out.
There was a mixup with Tricare while I was pregnant with my daughter and I had to use Medicaid for three months until it could be fixed for prenatal care.
Once it was fixed I remember the night and day treatment that I got at my OB’s office when I gave them my new insurance card. Suddenly I was a respected married woman and not a ‘welfare mom’.
There are a lot of people who are working their way up or who are going through a bad time.
Right now my daughter’s going through it. She just lost her job and she has a baby. She’s busting her butt to get back on top. Guess how much money she gets in food stamps? $35 a month for her and the child. The only reason she’s even using the system is so that the baby has insurance.
Not everyone on welfare is a leach or a fraud. And nobody deserves to be told off by a stranger for accepting that help. To this day, E-4 and below qualify for WIC and their kids qualify for free lunches. Many also qualify for food stamps.
It’s happening. Opposing sides have become so polarized that neither can effectively communicate with the other. Asshat has no clue as to where his free money is coming from. He feels entitled and has a right to his welfare and will demand even more if given the chance. Woman is fed up with 33% of her income being pinched from her check before she has a say. Then has to put up with .0xx% in sales tax being added to every purchase, pays fees to drive, own property, etc., all under the watch of an unresponsive and welfare enabling government. She then has to wait behind Asshat who buys the same stuff with free money that she worked for. This is going to happen more and more. I totally empathize with the woman’s point of view but can’t say I’m proud of her for losing it and a part of me hopes she pummels the guy since there’s no other hope left of turning the ship around. This is just the next phase in the societal meltdown.
In Georgia, both could be arrested and charged with child abuse for the profanity in front of the children.
Should have happened, esp with the video evidence.
I remeber being a new parent, just out of the service; working my butt of to make ends just barley meet. Went to Walmart Hypermart and ended up behind a lady with 2 carts, a fur coat and jewelry. One cart was loaded with food and the other cart was loaded with consumer goods. The cashier rung up the food cart, telling her Food Stamps wouldn't pay for certain items. She takes them out and places them in the 2nd cart. She them proceeds to pay for a cart of food with a wad of food stamps. The cashier then rings up the 2nd cart, which came to several $100s. She pulls out a wad of cash and peels 3 $100 bills of and hands them over. I was in shock, and my wife was almost in tears, because of the struggles we went through to pay our bills and put food on the table. On that day I knew with 100% certainty that the system is corrupt and nothing more than largesse for the politicians to buy votes. For every person that could possibly "need" the help that are 10s of 10s that are abusing the system with the willing nod of politicians.
They both appear to be tacky Wal-Mart shoppers. She’s right, but it was inappropriate for her to personally attack him in front of her children and his child. I don’t think she helped the cause. She knows nothing about his personal situation. It infuriates me when I see women with up-do’s, fancy painted nails, jewelry and designer hand bags using food stamp cards, but it would be tacky to attack them in line. (but mainly because they would probably kill me in the parking lot)
Who would hire him?
Valid point!
“I would think if he were actually working 50-60 hours a week, hed be making too much to qualify for food stamps.”
Nope. At slightly above minimum wage, he qualifies for food stamps with 2 dependents (1 wife, 1 kid)
Even when working 60 hours a week
http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/income-rules-income-limits
(minimum wage @ 60/hrs/wk is $1875 gross per month)
E-1 to E-4 US soldiers work more than full time and, if they have a family, they qualify for foodstamps and WIC.
I live in NYC and have been stuck in supermarket lines behind morbidly obese (but expensively dressed) welfare matriarchs who are using benefits cards to buy hundreds of dollars of good food. Then, if they want to buy anything above their limit, they whip out rolls — rolls! — of cash and peel off twenties. Yes, it is infuriating. However, I would never argue with one of these people because I don't want to be stabbed by one of her cohorts when we both exit the supermarket.
Aside from risking your life by fighting with strangers, if we are being honest about the situation in this video, we don't REALLY know what is going on in this man's life. Many food stamp recipients are indolent, but some legitimately deserve the benefit. Maybe he really is working at a low-paying job and maybe he qualifies for food stamps because he doesn't make enough money to feed everyone in his family real food. This could be the case here. Add to that the fact that this guy is very skinny, unlike many who claim that they'd starve without food stamps. This guy looks as if he's starving in spite of food stamps!
Don't fight with strangers; take your argument to the voting booth; mind your own business when dealing with actual people one-on-one; and don't use offensive language around children.
My stepson worked for a local chain a few years ago...and he absolutely had to ring them up as two separate purchases. And he would come home with stories about arguments he had gotten into with customers about what qualified...there is some nuance in the definition of a ‘prepared food’ that can be argued. I think this may be because in our state there was a criminal investigation into a chain of stores that was ringing up the wrong stuff as eligible. So, my stepson’s chain did not purely rely on their barcode system - they also made the cashier police it. Or, maybe the chain didn’t have the ability/software to segregate goods in the barcode system.
And I’ve absolutely seen the sorting of goods on the belt at Wal Mart, very recently. Maybe its old habit - I don’t know, but I still see it quite often. A lot of times there is more than one person, and there seems to be some gymnastics between them, paying for different things - so maybe this causes the sorting...but it definitely still happens. I notice, because it slows everything down, while I wait in line.
Walmart. 9th wonder of the world.
So I looked it up.
The AVERAGE is $127 a month per person.
I spend about $140 a month per person,
Of MY OWN MONEY.
Barely more than someone on food stamps.
I don't complain about what I have to eat.
Actually went shopping on Saturday. Spent 1-1/2 hours planning the shopping and finding the coupons and deals.
1-1/2 hours of pre shopping planning...you could call that work.
The store chain in the area that I shop at is called Meijer. They have a savings program called Mperks.
They will track your spending for you if you want.
Last year I averaged almost 45% in savings, by shopping with coupons and sales and bonus rewards.
I'm usually working 50-60 hours a week.
I have very little sympathy for most of the food stamp people who complain.
Actually, the EBT cards they use here in Pennsylvania are pretty easy to pick out. If you get behind someone with a shopping cart full of chips, prepared food and great cuts of meat around the 3rd of the month, chances are pretty good that they are using an EBT card.
At minimum wage or close to it, working 50-60 hours a week won’t feed a family without subsidies. That’s barely enough to keep one person alive at subsistence level.
You know, I put in 50-60 hour weeks...”
Yeah? BS!
Most cogent thing I’ve read on FR in weeks.
Yes, and I do not begrudge helping someone in that circumstance. Its truly a helping hand not a hand out.
Yes, I know its probably due to poor life choices BUT: he is working and working hard.
The stories of folks with many kids and who sit around all day irk the fire outta me....
I could have qualified for government assistance when I was in the service way back when.
