“Today, vast swaths of the state’s Republican electorate, from Indianapolis to West Lafayette, have retreated from the culture wars. “

It’s less accurate to say they have retreated than reprioritized.

When your house is on fire, you don’t focus on the stopped up toilet.

Immigration, Trade, & Terrorism; ITT.

Trump got ahead because he focused on these three issues. When he deviated from them, he lost ground.

Cruz could have been where Trump is, IF he had focused on ITT from the get go. He didn’t.

He had an issue with evasiveness on specifics early on, denying the whole “for legalization, no I’m not” business. He waited far too long to parrot Trumps clear hard line.

Precisely. The United States faces an existential threat from uncontrolled illegal immigration because demographics is destiny, a lesson Europe is learning to its enduring sorrow. Unless we address that, along with trade and the rise of radical Islam, nothing else matters. So we prioritize.

Ironically, once you have a secure and prosperous country of people focused on opportunity and success, you'll be amazed at how easily so many of these cultural "problems" will melt away.
