I hate to say it, but after Trump has spent the last 9 months insulting everybody in the universe, his supporters might well expect some hostility.
Also, his out of control rhetoric has given the left exactly the excuse they needed.
He could have said whatever he wanted to say without giving the left a perfect excuse...except that he’s an old crazy guy.
