Gaslighting comes from the famous (and wonderful) Ingrid Bergman movie in which her husband does everything to convince her that all her actions and thoughts are not only wrong but crazy. He does this to get control and power.

By contrast, "astroturfing" is fake grass-roots; it is the practice of push-polling to create a result to make people think that others support something more than they really do, making the the person believes he is outside of the mainstream thinking.
